3 problem solving measures for team leaders

1. Ask what you can do.
You may or may not have contributed to the problem, but as team leader can contribute to the solution. Don’t forget the value of involving the team when appropriate – a team is often more effective at dealing with problems than an individual. Try to be flexible in solving problems. Consider changing policies if they seem unfair, or providing needed information or guidance, allowing time off to deal with personal worries, etc. – use your imagination! (Don’t counsel team members on personal issues – this is best left to professionals.)

2. Consider a compromise.
When team members can’t agree on something, a compromise may work. For example, if the disagreement is over proper work procedures, try to arrive at a new procedure that will meet objectives yet satisfy those concerned. Be realistic, however – compromise isn’t always possible, and you have the final say regarding disagreements among team members.

3. Assert your authority
As team leader, remember that problem solving is part of your job. Don’t assume that problems will fix themselves or abandon your responsibility to solve them as quickly as possible. Instead of viewing problems as a burden, see them as an opportunity for improvement. Face up to problems, and tackle those head – on. You’ll get results and earn respect in the process!
