Is reservation promoting caste system?

Is reservation promoting caste system

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]hough this is a very controversial topic, to talk about. But I would just like to express my views on the same and would try not to hurt anyone’s sentiments. So, I would like to throw some light on the issue that is probably not paid attention to.

  •  Is reservation actually serving the very purpose for which it was implemented?
  • Is every person, who actually needs it, getting the benefits?
  • Is the policy creating a sense of inferiority complex among the people belonging to different castes?

These are some questions which have been boggling my mind since long. I will quote an incident which has actually made me think this way.

On the day of admissions in my college, there were separate queues for different “castes” for submitting the mark sheets and other relevant documents. I also went and stood in a queue relevant to my caste. Then, a girl came to me, she was very damsel and naïve(my assumption), she asked me “Hey, why are there different queues for submitting the documents?” I said if you belong to a general caste, go and join this line, if an OBC then this one, or else the third one! She was amazed to my reply. Perhaps she didn’t know anything about “this” system. She said “But why I need to stand in a different line, why not there is just a single queue?” Then in a lowered tone, she said, “I feel this embarrassing, specifying my caste and then standing in a separate queue!” She added “Why can’t we be one? Is it necessary to tell the caste and then being segregated on this basis? Why can’t we be just “God’s kids”? And I was touched, hearing these lines from her. But that time I had no reply to her question, other than helping her with the formalities of admissions.

But I would definitely say “caste” is something we (people) have created, the almighty never discriminated anyone on this basis. So, why are we creating these walls between us, which ignites hatred and an atmosphere of negative vibes? Can’t we head towards a “Caste-free” India? And, this is not to hurt anyone’s feelings, I’m just hoping it won’t be not wrongly interpreted. But, certainly this is something which needs discussion.

Open for suggestions!

Cheers!!

By the looks of it, caste is not going to leave India anytime soon. Especially, the politicisation of caste makes the system all the more strong.

  • Initially reservation was a great trigger for uplifting the downtrodden societies but with time the reservation quotas have increased to illogical ratios and gradually have started promoting caste segregation instead of curbing it!

  • Great…………….Write up. Very nicely written. I don’t think is any body in this world would not agree the things written. India must be cast free India. If reservation is required, the actual help should go to those who actually need it. It should be on the basis of poverty on the basis of Cast or creed. Well said.

I agree that it was needed at one point but segregating people on the basis of their caste is only doing more harm than good in todays india

I truly support your point of view. Caste walls are created by us. We should not descriminate on the basis of religion or caste.

Great angle to look at reservations from! The concern though is that very few, y-gen or successful ones have this view towards the issue. The rest would act with hypocracy when it benefits them. I am sure the same is applicable to the ones without reservation. Their negetive skewness towards the issue is only because they are at disadvantage and not because it promotes inequality. (Looking forward to see more views on this)

I totally agree with you Neha, these reservations for different castes(OBC,SC,ST,KM….etc) are almost everywhere whether it is about education or about govt. Jobs. These reserved candidates can get admission easily as compared to Genral candidates nd same system in applying govt jobs.
Well I think that reservation is promoting caste system, as it shows that reserved castes like(OBC,SC,ST,KM..) are not equal to genral caste nd belong to lower class people in society.
Neha, my suggestion is that these reservation system must be removed in aur nation as quickly as possible .
    Thank you

    Your’s truely

Perhaps a very sensitive issue I’d say. We cannot do away with caste. I’m not being pessimist or whatever, but that’s the truth! Dr. Ambedkar gave away his life just to do away with caste but then he realized that caste has it’s roots buried so deep in India that it is next to impossible. And reservation system has undoubtedly stimulated the caste system, which is sad.

In this system of reservation , only a few takes benefits. Those who really need it , they don’t even know about it. It is most likely that Son of a poor farmer belonging to lower cast don’t get benefits as he may not be aware of the reservation system and on the other side people get good positions and are highly paid not because they scored good marks in selection procedure. The later layout the path and generations follows without putting some really hard work.

Also if u r providing reservation than it should be provided only once,I don’t know what’s the logic behind providing it again and again

Reservation in admission ( as mentioned by the author )

    Then

reservation in the form of age relaxation

    Then

    Reservation in selection for job

    Then

Reservation in the form of promotion priority

If u have equalized the person once by providing the quota then what’s the logic behind giving it again and again

This system leads the incapable people to higher positions , hahahahaha

Would u allow a doctor to operate upon you if u get to know that he got his degree and job because he belongs to such and such cast… Same situation with engineer designing skyscrapers ( the flats ) ……. And the list is never ending.
So this is direct harm to the development of nation. instead of thisYou can arrange some special teaching classes for the weak children.
    ( weak or deprived

( weak and deprived children don’t have any specific cast )

providing reservation on the bases of cast is base less,

Roots of this system are deep inside the political system (,, i,.e. Vote ki raajneeti )

    Rest all you know….

It is a very common issue.. Everyone is questioning the benefits of reservations these days.. Different people end up in a conflict because they have different opinions.. I just hope that the benefit reaches those who need it and if not, we have the answer to this question ..

Yes, somehow the reservations promote caste system
But in today’s scenario the reservation should be on economic basis i.e. on the income and expenses of the person
It should no longer be on the basis of whether you are from SC/ST/OBC
Of course, these groups have equally suffered discrimination and oppression at their time .But one should stop taking the unnecessary advantage and give an opportunity to people who are genuinely suffering because of lack of opportunities in their lives
