What is Gender Equality?

We all talk about genders and equality liberty so often thWhat is Gender Equalityat we forget they are different words connected together through our vocabulary and will to connect them .

Gender refers to both women and men, and the relations between them .Gender equality in very simple terms mean  when women and men enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making.

As there is a definition to define it there are measures to measure it as well. different countries have different methodologies but basically do have an index to measure it.

some of them are as follows :-

United Nations Gender Inequality Index

Social Watch Gender Equity Index

World Economic Forum Global Gender Pay Gap Index

and many others methods used to map out the bigger picture.

In India gender discrimination is an unprecedented issue, traditional patriarch had placed women in the background and reduced its status to a  housewife .It’s not that being a housewife is wrong, But it is the stigma attached to it that haunts us and has given a license to harass.

According to the data of the foundation for sustainable development only 54 percent of Indian women are literate as compared to 76 percent of men. Women receive little schooling, and suffer from unfair and biased inheritance and divorce laws. This is not all these problems varies in category  and quantity in different states ranging from Rajasthan to Haryana.

In Haryana the ratio is low and in Rajasthan women have to fetch for an entire households and are also paid 30% less than the men.

It’s not that we have turned a blind eye to it all ,There are initiation’s like In 2010 India launched the National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW) n addition, a National Resource Center for Women has been set up and acts as a central repository for available information and research on all gender related issues.  India ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1993. The incentives through statistics determine the position of women in different strata of the society and strive to improve those conditions .Though not very instant and visible change can be seen but there is a change.

These incentives are like a blight light at the end of the tunnel but the point is how many of us see this light and how many of us have the courage to follow it better yet it accept it.

Nice article Jaidita. Even I have read about GII index, that measures equality on the basis of three different aspects; education, women participation and reproductive health and india ranks 127 out of 187 countries. Good you shred some light on this socio-economic topic. Steps have to be taken to improve the conditions.

I believe both gender equality and inequality exists in our society. The problem is equality is less prevalent than inequality and that is why the concern arises. Rather than generalising the issue, we must specifically target those platforms where gender inequality is more.

I’m so proud of you ! I am glad people are writing blogs on such sensitive topics in India. Nothing much to say about gender equality and I just hope people not only say words about it but also feel what they say from within. The blog is very impressive. Good job! 🙂

    Good article..!!
Just take an example, why people want to abort girl child.?
If a girl is born, parents have to use all their wealth for their studies, living and marriage ( with a huge amount of dowry). Plus if daughter is pregnant they have to take care of them, and then the expenditure of newborn. In return girls even cannot give a single drop of water at the end of parent’s life. This is the situation right here. And as you see gender discrimination is connected with many other social evils.

And look at the pic of this post, pink for girl and blue for men. This shows where it all starts from. Its from our mind.

    Well written..

And look at the pic of this post, pink for girl and blue for men. This shows where it all starts from. If a man wear a pink shirt, we should make sure that we don’t tease him. Its all starts from our mind. From the basic situations of our life.
