Supervision means instructing, observing, monitoring and guiding the work done by the subordinates. Supervision is maintaining the best view possible on the work done of one’s subordinates. It ensures that the work is being done as per the plans laid down. A supervisor is the person who guides and instructs the subordinates to act wisely.
Characteristics of Supervision
Supervision is an important part of directing function of management. Supervision is about nurturing the employees, sharing knowledge, skills. Supervision is a universal activity because it is needed at all levels of management. Supervision aims at ensuring optimum utilization of all the resources. It is a continuous process which is required at all times. Supervisors develop relationship that enables their subordinates to respond to the changes taking place in the environment. Supervision has special importance for lower- level managers as they require guidance. Good supervisors prove to be a good teacher, practitioner and consultant.
Functions of Supervision
Supervisor keeps a close eye on the subordinates. Supervisor maintains a direct contact with the workers by acting as a friend, philosopher and guide to them. Supervision helps in improving the quality of decision- making ability of the employees. Supervisor provides good on the job training to the workers to build an effective team. He assures control wherever he finds any flaws in the work-in-progress and rectifies there itself. Supervisor coordinates the practices with policies of administration. Supervision plays an important role in integrating the activities of different workers. He motivates his workers to perform effectively. His presence in the organization helps to avoid conflicts and misunderstanding between the workers and the management. Supervisor builds up high morale among the workers through good leadership. Supervisor gives feedback to the workers after analyzing their work.
In short, the supervisor act as a key man, mediator and as a human relation specialist. He translates plans into action which is very important for an organization.
