We all have heard the nursery school rhyme ‘ All work and no play makes jack a dull boy ‘ . In a country like India where people have a craze for many things, the face of sports have always put its right foot forward . If we look around, India is home to a diverse population playing many different sports like Badminton, Football, tennis etc., especially cricket, indeed keeping the spirit of sports intact .
Although the field of sports in India have always been at an incentive , the condition is not the same for every aspect of it . Two weeks back India discovered it had an ice hockey team . It took them six years and a little birdie called twitter to break the ice.
Despite ice hockey being the fastest and the most exciting team game in the world, the plight of Indian players is a bit more depressing . The ice hockey association of India ( IHAI) team took to social media to ‘beg’ for money seeking to crowdfund their trip to Kuwait to represent India at an Asia level tournament being held from 18th to 25th April 2o15 . A friend of the team with the handle @bhaiyyaspeaks was the first to send out a tweet about these cash – strapped apple cheeked men in shoulder pads and helmets who needed ₹12 lakh to participate in Kuwait. Soon a crowd funding website called Bitgiving offered to raise funds, #support ice hockey started trending . Within eight days of a campaign to raise ₹3.5 lakh online, over 250 people sent in ₹4.9 lakh to fund their dream , summing up to a total of 140% of
the funds .
Therefore, in our cricket crazy nation where cricket stars earn millions and other sports largely depends on government spending, the Indian ice hockey team still has a long way to go .
