Employee Counselling

In every field which requires dealing with people, counselling is essential. Counselling is a two-way process in which a counsellor provides help to the workers by way of advice and guidance.
Employee counselling involves a discussion of an emotional problem with an employee with the general objective of decreasing it. There are many factors which calls for systematic efforts in employee counselling, for example,
* Both interpersonal and intergroup conflict may cause emotional disorder. As a person with different backgrounds, point of view, values , needs and personalities interact, it is likely that a variety of conflict will develop and this may further change the relationship among people.
* Frustration is the second factor which calls for counselling. Reactions of frustrated behaviour are aggression, withdrawl, resignation, compromise etc. These reactions are in no way favourable to the individual or to the organisation. Counselling can help reduce frustrations by helping employees choose mature courses of action to overcome blockages preventing goal accomplishment.
* Stress on-the-job is desirable to some extent if it is mild and not sustained over a long period of time. There are many causes of stress on the job. The employee may feel that they have an overload of work, pressures with which they cannot cope up, tensions and insecurity. Stress may also arise off the job and be brought to work by employees. Important causes are family , social and financial problems. Counselling can play a great role in dealing with emotional disorders caused by stress.
Most importantly the counsellor should give sufficient importance to the communication process by which listening carefully to what the employee has to convey and by being responsive to the same and moreover, it is essential to generate the necessary confidence in the employee!
