Developing or underdeveloped?

developing or underdeveloped

After reading the heading, you must be thinking how stupid this question is. Everyone knows INDIA is a developing country. After all, India has seen a large development in various sectors in last 10 years , and further ,according to the definition of WORLD BANK , India falls in the category of developing nation.

But is this fact practically true?

Not really, because the underlying factors contradict this statement. According to a UN General Secretary, putting in simple words, a developing country is a place where people can enjoy free,  healthy and safe life. Whereas,  in an underdeveloped conutry people generally have no access to basic facilities of life, like, food, housing,  education,  transportation,  electricity, etc. Let’s understand some basic features of underdeveloped countries and decide, in which category does India fall.

1. Per Capita Income : India has a very low level of income. Almost one- third of the population living in India is under poverty line.

2. Population Rate : Since,  the population of India is increasing on a alarming rate,  it is also becoming the cause of many problems. With,  increasing population rate,  the rate of dependency is also increasing, i.e. , ratio of nonworking population to total population.

3. Inequality : Distribution of resources among people is highly uneven. More than half of the population living in rural areas don’t have the facilities of basic resources.

4. Health Care : Availability of doctors,  medicines and hospitals in far from the reach of poor people and people living in rural areas. The gap between the availability and the need is much more than the imagination.

5. Electricity : Almost 70 % of the population living in India still doesn’t have a proper access to electricity and live in gloomy days.

Apart from these,  there are many other social peculiarities,  like,  lack of access to job opportunities,  no safe drinking water, high illiteracy rate, male dominating society,  widespread child labour which distinguish India from developing nations.

Though we have seen many factors that prove that India still needs to make some serious attempts to overcome these issues. But, we also can’t forget the way India has developed over the last 10 years. Be it in the sector of technology or transportation, success of India cannot be overviewed. Hence, though features show that India falls in the category of Underdeveloped nations, but keeping in view the development ,Indai is described as developing country.
