Research Beyond Reservations

Research Beyond Reservations

Research beyond reservations…

Reservations have established their base since the time of independence. Sometimes, it has worked out for the good of the community and sometimes people have judged it as unfair. Though I do not support any one idea and try to be as neutral as possible, I happened to have a discussion with one of my friends. I belong to General category and found him to be of SC category after our discussion. The fact that I didn’t know he belonged to special category made our discussion healthy and unbiased.

I was in favor of abolishment of reservations from areas related to scientific research and development, be it a post of a scientist or admissions of students in research-based domains in educational institutions. I reasoned that research happens to be considered as a job in our country, while it is somehow not like so. A research on any current aspect of life needs hard work and open-mindedness so that we become ready to have the caliber to expect the unexpected. Researchers try on new things, and their success depends on their thoughts, and thoughts generate by intellect. The policy of reservation, though encourages people to think in the manner, but makes another deserving thinker, who may have better stated a problem, devoid of such an opportunity. So, there must be no bias when it comes to doing research, which may be beneficial for the nation in future.

My friend stated a few good viewpoints. A person who prospers via reservation can provide equal opportunity to his fellows to grow. He might be the reason of prosperity in his own village or the spark for future prospects. He may establish his own venture and provide economic stability to his community.

I restated the fact that reservations might be profitable or striving towards equality when it comes to working in a job. But when research aspects and requirements are not met in time, the level of research degrades and deteriorates. I gave a simple social explanation that a brilliant minded student in a reserved category may have to face bias in selection or opportunities, he may be socially looked down upon, despite of his rigorous efforts in doing research. So, research opportunities must be given entirely based on merit, since only meritorious strata can create a long-lasting impact. And when money becomes an issue, financial constraints must only be considered.

My friend again explained from the viewpoint of the government, that how difficult it is to create equality. But I had to stick with the fact that equality has nothing to do with research. Only the fruits of research can be distributed equitably and for that they must be sweet. By sweet, I mean good research work done in a lab without any sort of bias or social favor ism.

Though our discussion ended and we are still close friends, I do not know when viewpoints will match, because the well has already been dug. Those who benefit will keep on supporting it, those who don’t will keep on denying it.

Reservations is a much talked about topic among students nowadays. Those who belong to general category do not support reservations since feel that they have to get higher marks than the student who have reservations… So as rightly said by you those who benefit will keep on supporting it, those who don’t will keep on denying it. Very nicely described.

Reservations should be given to people who deserves it. Now the system is such that rich gets richest and poor becomes poorer!

There should be a reform in the reservation policy, it should be given to economically weaker section rather than based upon caste system.. highly debatable topic..!!

The main cause of resentment among people is the unfair use of reservations by well to-do people. There should be a criteria to give reservations considering both the financial status and caste of the nominee.
I’m talking about general reservations that we have almost everywhere!

Reservation should be given on the basis of income levels or to some generations in a family.. if one generation is educated coming generation doesn’t need quotas.. nice article

  • I believe that the parameter for the provision of granting reservation should be the financial status and not the caste and community one belongs to.poor people who are not capable of providing their children the quality education should only benefit from it.good article!
