Net Neutrality-Save the Internet

Net Neutrality-Save the Internet

Net neutrality, a much talked about concept these days, means that there is equal access to all legal websites with same speed and cost per unit of data. All the data available on the net is accessible by each and everyone irrespective of the telecom operator used. The idea of net equality has come into limelight because the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning to violate net neutrality, which is going to affect the consumers, the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and e-commerce in different ways.

The ISPs would be allowed to block or slow down some content on the net. They would charge high price for restricted data that would make net usage expensive. There would be paid prioritization for some websites and no transparency at all. In other words, telecom operators would exploit the consumers by charging high access fees for different websites. Contracts between the websites and the ISPs would alter the demand for those websites and the financially stabled websites would prosper than the smaller ones. The emerging e-commerce websites would not have an appropriate market and this would be a major setback for e-commerce in India. The only benefitted companies would be ISPs/telecom operators. But the profits of ISPs would be short term profits like that in any financial year, that would neither be enough nor be appreciated (by the consumers and firms) to offset the long term losses made by the websites whose growth would have been hampered by violation of net neutrality. The economic implication is that it would directly affect the economic growth and hence, the GDP adversely.

(Note: Airtel Zero plan, one of the schemes adopted by Airtel, is under high controversy these days regarding the violation of net neutrality.)

Here comes a call for protesting against the violation of net equality. People must make others aware about the issue, submit their response at the prescribed site and write letters to the authorities regarding the same. People must refrain from their laid-back attitude and take pro-active actions to “ Save the Internet ”.
