Human Trafficking in India: US Report

Human Trafficking in India US Report

India again managed to reach second spot in the world. There is nothing to be glorified at for India has been classified as a “Tier-II” nation in the human trafficking concerns. This is as per an annual report by the US State Department.

The 2015 Report “Trafficking in Person’s Report” exposed the ever-expanding $150 billion human trafficking industry. Both forms of trafficking- Forced labour and sex trafficking have been prevalent in our country for decades. It is utter dismay to say that our economy which is performing brilliantly on the development front, has failed to comply with the minimum standards of its Trafficking Victims’ Protection Act (TUPA) .India is making significant efforts with this respect but is lagging in its effective implementation. Another major concern is the lack of sufficient data on trafficking victims and the government’s negligible contribution towards the betterment of the victims.

As per the Report- “India is a source, destination and transit country for trafficking.”- Which is a huge accusation on India.  Many of you might be anxious about how will this be eliminated from our society? Well, the process has already begun.

Amidst all the issues put forward by the report, I would like to add that Indian police force is doing a commendable job in the anti-trafficking aspect. It is quite successfully busted many rackets involved in any kinds of human trafficking, be it sex trafficking, smuggling or forced labour. Many children who have been rescued by these rackets were sent to children homes and work is in progress to re-unite the lost children with their families. A big salute to Indian Police force!

While concluding, I would like to say that the country should focus on this grave issue and work on various anti-trafficking reforms. These norms should be implemented effectively across all the states of the country with strict punishment to those who advocate this in any form. Also, efforts should also be taken to help the victims come out of the mental and psychological trauma through the establishment of many rehabilitation centres across the country. It is high time that the authorities work upon to weed out this grave problem from the country.
