We all have some spare time in our daily lives and we either choose to take rest in that time or do something that we like. Different people have different hobbies like reading books, playing guitar, dancing, taking photographs and so on. But apart from being a great time-pass, some of the hobbies might happen to earn you a bit of money. Hobbies are obviously generated out of genuine interest but if it allows you to make money out of it, it’s definitely a perk.

People sometimes get confused between an income-generating hobby and side business. Clearing the doubt, if you would do it regardless of making money from it, then it’s an income-positive hobby but if you would not do it if it did not give money, then it’s a side business.

There are some things that you will need for generating income from your hobby. First, you should love doing whatever you choose to do regardless of the money it would produce. Second, you need to have a method for reaching people who will have the need of whatever you have for them and will pay you and last don’t invest too much into it so that if you want to stop doing this work tomorrow, you are not stuck because it will cost you a lot.

A few hobbies that you can pursue for making money can be-

  • Dancing– If you enjoy dancing and have knowledge of it at the same time, you can start teaching dance to kids. And it would not cost much to set-up classes and also you’ll easily find kids who want to learn dancing in your family or neighbourhood.
  • Making handmade jewellery or art– If you like creating something with your hand, eyes, mind and heart, then it’s not too hard to find buyers. You can start by selling it in your neighbourhood or in family get-togethers. You can also set up stalls at exhibitions and can start teaching this art to students.
  • Tutoring a subject you are passionate about– Earning on this depends on how much qualified you are and whether you enjoy teaching. But only do so if you know all about the subject, don’t have any difficulty dealing with kids and if you can guide the child properly because remember child’s future is at stake. You can start by teaching your kid’s friends at first and then gradually increase number of students.
  • Writing– If you love writing, you can start writing blogs or can any time go for writing a book if you are passionate enough. You can put ads on your blog from various services available online and the best way for customer connection is to tell your friends about it and ask them to share it further.

An income-generating hobby is great way to do something that you enjoy and without much effort generate a little bit of income from it. Since you enjoy doing it you won’t get bored of it and because of the external motivation (i.e. money) that you are getting, you’ll start putting more effort to do the job. Moreover, your money will be staying in your pocket and might even grow a little bit.

I really liked the idea of generating income from our hobbies. But, I would have loved the idea of pursuing what we love as a career, which is mostly hobbies. Nonetheless, it makes a person independent in early age and also provides additional financial help.

  • Many people think that it is only a dream to be able to convert their hobby or passion into their source of livelihood or feasible income. On the contrary, as long as you believe in yourself and in your work and have an entrepreneurial thinking hat, this dream can be converted into a living reality.
