Learning is said to be a lifelong process. You never stop learning but is it the same with studying? You have to study something to learn anything about it, right? Then why isn’t studying a lasting process!

The root of this lies in the fact that most people, after attaining a certain age don’t feel the need to expand their horizons. A major cause of this perception is the availability of suitable jobs to these people with limited but borderline adequate academic backdrop. This creates a mole of a thought in people’s minds that you only need to study till you get a decent job out of it. And thus the world of UG and PG exist.

While most let the dust settle on their books when they themselves settle down, there are a courageous few who know that learning is the outcome and studying is the process. They frequently revisit their old books with nostalgia and run after new ones with outrageous zeal, even after they get a job.

The reason behind this little but considerable number of people still pursuing some degree even after settling down is either an undying love for knowledge or the need to change streams or majors.

Whatever might be the reason, the truth is- To learn, you need to study. And to study is to open the gates of knowledge that has eluded your life till the point.

You must have heard or seen the advertisement campaign launched by the government of India to create awareness about mental illness and depression. After an era of considering it a taboo and looking down upon it, the people of the country, the generation X was finally able to rise above the myth that depressed or mentally unstable people were a bane to the world. The recent confession by everyone’s favourite Deepika Padukone added flame to the fire and caused mass level empathy for people suffering from this disease.

What we realised from this nationwide crusade is that people with mental sickness are in between us, they may be your colleagues or your employees or probably your employers! Is our HR department equipped to deal with this sensitive issue?

Depression can be caused by personal or work related problems. If it’s a family matter, the HR must arrange for counselling and therapy to help the affected. They should be given time and as little a work load as possible. Taking them off time consuming projects might help. Though, if it’s due to stress at workplace, a different approach is required. The patient should be given therapy sessions as per the guidelines of a psychoanalyst. Also, if it’s caused by too much workload, paid vacations might help a great deal. Sometimes, lack of motivation or appreciation causes a person to sink. During this, handing over projects with little risk of failure creates a driving force and assured success fulfils the deprivation of appreciation.

Such people do not need your sympathy but empathy. They need to be understood and given time to deal with their problems. They demand patience and precious time of the organization but once they recover, they can be the most loyal and hardworking business people in their community. Believe me, people are worth every second and penny you spend on them.

To ask for transparency in businesses and offices is a risk you take on your own! And I say this not just to retaliate against the purely theoretical fact that “The greater the transparency, better the justice”, no! There are many things better kept secret. Wondering what they might be?

Your boss’ pay-check for a starter, or how much bonus did one of your extremely hard working colleague earn. Take it from an expert, it is better if you don’t know. Because once you know something, you cannot help but react. An average human’s reaction to the above stated suggested mysteries would be to gossip and condemn out of spite, envy and misery.

While experts might believe that transparency builds trust and lets you down not easily but bluntly, I may beg to differ. What these theories instate are ideal principles, that if you knew how much your competition is getting extra, you’d gear up. Or if you realized the monetary worth of being your own boss, you’d be motivated.

Do these things actually happen? A few might say yes and the rest might say no while most are unaffected by the recent turn of events. While I agree that transparency promotes truth and credibility, I am also of the opinion that secrecy has its own mystical enigma and gives everyone the benefit of doubt. But you might not want to get your hopes very high, we all know- The higher you get, greater is the fall.

Apart from theories, observations, experiments and words of wisdom, it’s the HR department’s decision at the end of the day. And whatever it might be, we have to suck it up and live with it. Not to say we might not enjoy it at all. But TBH, some things are better left unsaid.

All throughout your life you’ve heard all about the hard work that HR department has to put up and how benevolent and considerate they are, not to forget their utmost importance in every industry. But it’s not always rainbows and butterflies. HR has been condemned by the masses for the worst of the mistakes. And they’re much more ridiculous and outrageously dictating than you can imagine.

Here are 6 mistakes made my HR departments all over the world that will leave you thinking, “What even!?” :

Literally #1- Not only is the criteria for “Best employee” unexplained or vague or has impossible standards, it’s the least of people’s worries. In an organization of a thousand workers, only a handful actually give two craps about whose picture is on the wall this month.

Sick (no) leave- It’s not exactly the employee’s fault that he/she fell ill during important days. Desperate times call for desperate measures but a few projects are not worth initiating an influenza epidemic! Let the sick soul rest.

Not so dressy code- Stitch-level dress policies are not just infuriating and degrading, you cannot help but wonder if it’s violation of personal space. Fashion police emergency!

No pictures please- You may be appalled by the fact that many offices prohibit any personal decorative items in employees’ cubicles. It’s said to disturb the workplace aura and calls for unwanted comfort and attention. Ok. But I happen to have a really cute dog!! L

Your aunt died? Sad! Proof?- Bereavement leave policies are as despicably inhuman as it can get. It’s sad enough that your family member died, now you have to bring funeral evidence to get paid-leave. Holy mother of God!

No references- You worked hard and remained loyal to your institute for a period of a few years and yielded monetary profits. But now that you’re leaving for good, your boss who was once all over you will not give job references to you. Why? Even I don’t know exactly how this promotes allegiance!

Ah! Why, oh why did you betray us HR?

Waking up early even on weekends, running around the city in scorching heat, complaining about the stink of sweat and dehydration, who wants to update their CV old-fashioned way? Well, we’re not here to learn that because every orthodox student is currently tackling the stereotypical way of adding stars to his CV by running in the rat race of being hired by the biggest of the names! But we have some out-of-the-box therapies/experiences for you that might come out to be much more beneficial than any superficial internship.

Not for even a second can you assume that they do not require hard work, but where there is a will, we create numerous ways. Here’s to the road not taken:

Indulge your inner artist- Whether you’re a writer, a photographer, a musician, a painter or a singer, no talent is more or less. You can practise at home or join any professional institute. You might believe that ink and paper experience may have more credibility but wait till people see your skills live!

Read- It’s needless to say that reading is a dying art. So if you cannot save the tigers, save the world where dreams come true from absolute extinction. European, American, Asian, English… A whole new world of stories, true or dreamy, await you with writers from all over the globe. And the plus points are beyond the word limit of any page.

Explore the world- Go to places you’ve been, talk to people you’ve never seen and do what you’ve always wanted to. Vacations are a great time to explore the world and in the process, introspect. Who knows, you might gain experiences much more precious than the ones you can get on deskjobs.

Go tech-savy- If you really want to work but avoid all the fuss, go through tons of virtual summer job offers available in your field of interest. You’ll love doing it and from the comfort of your place or the nearest CCD.

Happy Holidays fellow students! I hope you have a memorable one. Try and enjoy the summer.

The Onion may be a spoof magazine, focused on bringing into news less prominent pieces of bulletin through humour and sarcasm but the truth is, HR Department has become a target of a lot of criticism. The reason behind this brazen denigration is that HRD has fallen victim of power play. This particular article might be fictitious comedy but it objectively points out the aristocracy in offices all over the globe. Mad kings are everywhere and even crazier are their rules.

What prompts me into writing about this is the sheer absurdity of some workplaces’ rules and regulations. From the acceptable number of holes in ones ears to the appropriate size range of ones heels and tie, the boss has clearly laid out principles in these matters of absolute concern! Why? For no other reason than to instil fear in the heart of the workforce. Fear of getting a warning, memo, pay cut or chance of being in the boss’ bad book. These irrational paranoias are said to impose discipline in the hearts and minds of the employees, external of course.

With these foolish rules, the boss relentlessly dumps all the responsibility of constructing a harmonious working environment on the HR department. The result being a sense of stupidity midst the fog of fear, emanating an aura of heavy grudges lingering in the workplace. And the liability is on HR, yes HR did it!

The blame game continues but it only makes working bitter! The HR department thus needs to rationalize with the superiors and only execute rules which actually make sense. It’s a difficult task but the results are drastic! From happier faces to loyalty, it is worth it all.

While yet another HR revolution is stemming out of this silly dictatorship, let’s continue to scale the sizes of our skirts till then!

Think twice before posting! It’s not an advice but a clear shot warning for young party enthusiasts who are big on social networking websites. The reasons are undeniably imprudent and plain but ignoring them can cost you that much awaited promotion or can even get you sacked! Especially since you befriended a few jealous colleagues on Facebook or accepted your boss’ follow request.

The implications of what seem to be absolutely harmless way of building bonds and networks can be devastating. To understand, take a look at these point…

The time of your posts- You might not notice but your HR manager can clearly see why you’re late for the office every day, and it’s definitely not because of the traffic jam but because you’re in the habit of staying up late in the night and updating your profile with your fun-activities.

What happens on weekends doesn’t stay at weekends- You might be a hard worker but flaunting your party animal instincts on your social sites can be seen as an act of disparaging the company’s image. So, work hard, party harder but don’t let your manager know!

Not so personal- Keep your personal life private. Flaunting the series of dates you’ve been on can hamper your image as a business-minded person. Especially if you’re in a budding office romance, steer clear of the eye of the masses.

Booze, babes and bikes- Never let your colleagues or boss know how you even intend to spend your hard earned money, it might give them an incentive to even decrease or stagnate your pay.

Never!- Yes, don’t ever post anything on office timings if you’ve befriended the boss or his/her chamcha! He might get to know and you will get into trouble for it. So watch out folks, boss might be watching!

Just exactly how do people go from being door-to-door salesman to becoming the key persons of their enterprise or starting their own businesses? The key of this success lies in the fact that salesmanship actually gives you an edge in the field of Human Resource development. Before your brain wreck yourself wondering how the two are even remotely relatable and question my sense of argument, here are a few points to explain my stance:

Dealing with various kinds-

Meeting with a variety of people teaches you that each individual has different characteristics and needs- some generic, some specific. To positively influence a number of people, your body automatically generates a series of people-pleasing habits. Such conduct benefits the salesman later when he has to implement team work and build a harmonious environment amongst diversity.

Hard work and understanding-

To know how a person feels and thinks and to apply it in your existing training to procure constructive results requires unimaginable amount of hard work, perseverance and presence of mind. All the attributes required to bring a variety of people under one roof and make them work hard towards achieving a single goal are acquired by this understanding of people’s minds.

Win-win-

To realise a point that is profitable and approving to both the salesman and the customer is a rare achievement, but any salesman able to conquer that fort is a born manager. As in human resouce department, your focus is on employees’ satisfaction.

Facing objections-

A salesman faces more failure than success, but with time and experience, the success ratio evens out. This happens because he develops a way of tackling people’s objections, emotionally and rationally and finding solutions to their problems. In doing this, he also develops a focused problem-solving strategy, a trait much needed in the human resource department.

Did you realize that the kinds of games you play determine the kind of person you are? And I’m not talking about the complex mind games. Yes, you may be enjoying sleepless nights of Call of Duty but I don’t mean to say you’re becoming a trained sniper assassin, what I mean is that your mind is involuntarily becoming focused and you’re becoming a keen observer.

The reason I’m talking about gaming is because a new trend is emerging, something out of the box has been carried out from something so apparent that you might not be able to believe its sheer brilliance by looking at its simplicity. Somewhere, some brilliant mind has collaborated gaming with human resource management. No, we’re not allowing the employees to play games during office hours as a recreational activity, it’s much more ground-breaking and multifaceted than that.

Have you heard of the game My Marriott Hotel? The game lets you manage a virtual kitchen. It’s the type of game in which you hire cooks, manage the kitchen, buy supplies with limited resource etc. The story behind this particular, very stimulating game is that Marriott International launched it as an open offer to attract job applicants from all over the globe by linking the game to the real world experience and obviously, the careers page of the company’s website.

Mitre Corp.’s “Job of Honor” allows you to lead your life as the office’s manager, struggling to complete everyday tasks. It was released to attract a newer, younger, more virtual-based generation to pool into the company’s experienced but old work force.

These games have not only helped the human resource department into testing, analysing and attracting the young and the vibrant but has also proved to be a great source of brand marketing, following the figures that show a great boost in the companies’ businesses. So GAME ON people! And get a job!

As you go to any Starbucks near you, you find employees working even on their breaks. Having a jaw-aching-permanent-smiley-face meeting with a client or looking at the same computer screen, doing the same work just at a different table is on their daily to-do list. By looking at them, you wonder at the kind of life you’ll have in a few years, the kind of monotonous routine you’ll helplessly accept as your future.

Come to think of it, a job where you can relax in pyjamas, work late nights on weekdays and maybe noon on weekends because, party time! No, it’s not one of the Kim Kardarshian or Paris Hilton sort of jobs where you’re being paid for… existing? We’re talking about “Remote Jobs”. Loosely speaking, remote jobs are work at home employment opportunities that provide a respectable title as well as a handsome payment, if found the right one.

As websites like FlexJobs, Working Nomads, Staff.com are popping in every state and country, finding the profile suitable to your needs is now a piece of cake. To top it all, they practically do all the work for you. A complex algorithm searches for acceptable, most appropriate job offers for you on the basis of the details you give on your profile. The outcome is a filtered list of suitable employers, all set to go in your e-mail, every week!

This works both ways. Not only do they help provide employment opportunities to situation-struck people, it delivers quality workforce to firms looking for them. The ones most benefited are the enterprises that don’t have enough infrastructure to support a large staff or the companies looking for expansion. The types of jobs available might be part-time or full-time on the discretion of the employee and the employer but the result is the same- better job offers, higher employment opportunities, more suitable work field and a happily ever after…
