All the conditioning, associated with the sourcing, procurement, conversion and logistics operation, comes under the force chain operation. Above all, it encompasses the collaboration and collaboration with the parties like suppliers, interposers, distributors and guests. Logistics Management is a small portion of Supply Chain Management that deals with the operation of goods in an effective way.

It has been noticed that there’s a drastic change in the manner in which business was conducted numerous times alone and now. The enhancement in technology leads to the development of all crucial areas of business. Supply Chain Management also evolved as an enhancement over Logistics Management, from once times.

What is Supply Chain Management?

Supply Chain Management( SCM) is a series of connected conditioning related to the metamorphosis and movement of raw material to the finished goods till it reaches the end stoner. It’s the outgrowth of the sweat of multiple associations that helped in making this chain of conditioning successful.

These associations may include the enterprises with whom the association is presently working like mates or suppliers, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. The conditioning may include integration, sourcing, procurement, product, testing, logistics, client services, performance dimension, etc.

Supply Chain Management has a multi-dimensional approach which manages the inflow of raw accoutrements and workshop in progress(semi-finished goods) within the association and the end product outside the association till it reaches the hands of the final consumer with a complete emphasis on the client demand.

Functions of Supply Chain Management

Purchasing: The first function of supply chain operation is copping. In the manufacturing process, raw accoutrements are needed to produce goods and products. It’s important that these accoutrements are carried and delivered on time so that product can begin. For this to do, collaboration with suppliers and delivery companies will be needed to avoid any implicit detainments.

Operations: Demand planning and forecasting are generally needed before accoutrements can be carried out, as the demand request will mandate how numerous units are to be produced and how important material is needed for the product. This function is important in force chain operation as associations must directly read demand to avoid having too important or too little force that will lead to losses in profit. thus, demand planning and soothsaying must be tied in with force operation, product, and shipping to avoid similar miscalculations.

Logistics: Logistics is the part of the supply chain operation that coordinates all aspects of planning, purchasing, product, warehousing, and transportation so that the products will reach the end consumer without any hindrances. It’s helpful to have acceptable communication between multiple departments so that products can be packed to guests snappily and at the smallest cost.

Resource Management: Product consumes raw accoutrements, technology, time, and labour. Resource operation ensures that the right coffers are allocated to the right conditioning in an optimized manner. This will insure that an optimized product schedule is created to maximize the effectiveness of the operations. When calculating the available capacity, you should consider the capabilities of each resource and determine whether they can perform the work that’s listed on it.

Information Workflow: Information sharing and distribution is what keeps all of the other functions of force chain operation on track. However, it could break apart the entire chain, If the information workflow and communication are poor. numerous dislocations that arise in force chains can be averted by increased visibility and communication. Having a harmonious system that’s used by all departments will insure that everyone is working with the same set of data and will help miscommunications and time spent streamlining everyone on new developments.

What is Logistics Management?

The operation process which integrates the movement of goods, services, information, and capital, right from the sourcing of raw material, till it reaches its end consumer is known as Logistics Management. The idea behind this process is to give the right product with the right quality at the right time in the right place at the right price to the ultimate client. Logistic conditioning are divided into two broad orders they are:

Inbound Logistics: The activities which are concerned with the procurement of material, handling, storage and transportation

Outbound Logistics: The activities which are concerned with the collection, maintenance, and distribution or delivery to the final consumer.

Functions of Logistics Management

Order processing: The Logistics conditioning start from the order processing which might be the work of the marketable department in an association. The marketable department is the one that ensures that the payment terms and the delivery terms have been met and also processes the order from within the company.

Materials handling: Material Running is the movement of goods within the storehouse. It involves handling the material in such a way that the storehouse is suitable to reuse orders efficiently. Although it may sound like a mundane task, it’s an important bone and an ongoing exertion in any storehouse.

Warehousing: These are consumer durable companies which are present in multiple countries If we take illustration of LG or Samsung. Their manufacturing might be at one point, but the distribution is across the world. therefore, warehousing plays a huge part and is one of the important Logistics conditioning.

Transportation: Now we come to one of the major logistics conditioning which is one of the most coffers-heavy and profit-heavy members of logistics. There’s a single reason that transportation is expensive – Energy. Be it petrol, Diesel or gas, energy is expensive, and it’s substantially consumed in transportation conditioning. This is why companies spend lakhs to control transportation charges because it’s one of the loftiest variable expenditures for any company.

Packaging: There are two types of packaging – One which the client sees on the shelf of supermarkets or hypermarkets where the package appears seductive and makes the client buy the packages. The other is transport packaging where the products are packed in bulk so as to avoid any breakage or spillage and yet allow them to transfer huge volumes of the product safely from one place to another.

key Differences

The inflow and storehouse of goods outside and outside the establishment are known as Logistics. The movement and integration of force chain conditioning are known as Supply Chain Management.

The main end of Logistics is full customer satisfaction. Again, the main end behind Supply Chain Management is to gain a substantial competitive advantage.

There is only one organization involved in Logistics while some organizations are involved in Supply Chain Management.

Supply Chain Management is a new trend in the market as compared to Logistics.

Logistics is only an activity of Supply Chain Management.

Conclusion

Logistics is a veritably old term, originally used in the service, for the conservation, storehouse and transportation of army persons and goods. currently, this term is used in numerous spheres, not specifically in the service after the elaboration of the conception of Supply Chain Management. It has also been said that SCM is an addition to Logistics Management as well as SCM comprises logistics. Both are thick. Hence they don’t contradict but condense each other. SCM helps Logistics to be in touch with the transportation, storehouse and distribution platoon.

Logistics and SCM (Supply Chain Management) relates to managing the supply chain related activities in an organization such as transportation, warehousing and delivering products to the right door. However, strategic management of supply chain and logistics is crucial for organizations, to drive higher efficiencies and reduce costs.

Important Concepts

The basic concepts involved while learning the logistics and SCM are-

Logistics and SCM Strategy

Supply Chain Strategic Management

Strategic Decision Making

Supply Chain Design

Logistics Network Planning

Logistics and SCM Costing

Logistics and SCM Optimization

Safety and Security

Sustainability and Environment

Risk Management

Monitoring and Performance Measurement

Future Developments

Let’s now listen to the leading industry expert Mr. Utkarsh Pathak has 11+ years of experience in logistics and SCM, including planning and engineering, transportation execution, imports and e-commerce. He had worked in senior capacities in Accenture, Delhivery, and johnson methic. And currently working as a senior manager of product strategy at TataNG. We seek his guidance to learn more about logistics management both as a subject and a profession and will know about his career trajectoryin logistics management.

Q1. Why did you choose this field and what are the opportunities available in logistics management?

Answer: To answer the first part of why did I choose to be a part of the logistics and supply chain world. It all goes before my school day. I had a clear-cut guts and instinct liking towards railways, especially the goods train. How do they operate, and that drives me towards what kind of world it is, how it goes around logistics. In graduation as well I got little chance to study about logistics and decided to pursue my MBA in the supply chain. So, that is how it all started. There was always a curiosity that how exactly how something is made available to the customers at the right time & place. That all drive me towards an entire ecosystem of the supply chain and henceforth I am here now.

In terms of opportunities in supply chain and logistics, I think there is enormous seek, and demand for people to get into this ecosystem of the supply chain. Not just in India but overall globally as well. The thing is that every passing day we are trying to solve something or the other for the customers. To fulfil that bridge lot of supply chain innovation is required. Be it logistics, warehousing, transportation or anything else IT setup financially. We all see people who can drive some part and have synergy in collaborations in a way that we can give good customer satisfaction. This is the utmost requirement of each and every firm be it a service industry or manufacturing one. I see a lot of potentials.

What I saw 10 years back and today I see myself and my fellow mates, colleagues, and professionals I see a lot of potential. The potential is going to increase with every passing day.

Q2. What are the skills required for a logistics professional to be successful and make a good career?

Answer: Purely from a skillset point of view, very practically speaking to excel well in the logistic and supply chain industry, you need only 2 things. One of them is a good command of proficiency in terms of excel operations i.e. MS excel, because we have to look into a lot of number data consultancy. There are other tools also, but a student who is entering this field should be a lit but familiar with MS Excel, MS word, and MS PowerPoint. The second scale which is very important and vital is the communication and information part of it. So you need to be more aware of what is going on around the world, the basic sense and the knowledge.

That is the skillset that your awareness will help you excel very deeply and very easily when you have both these skills combined together. So analytical skills and numerical ability is the number one. Other than that being aware of logistics terms and strong communication skills.

Q3. Various logistics and SCM companies are coming up to remove inconsistencies and achieve a higher level of efficiency, what is your opinion about it?

Answer: Horizontal collaboration has become the need of an hour for various organizations. Over a period of time initially, it was more of a VMI-driven approach. Now it has become more of a reality for even a startup. This is because collaboration is done only to increase efficiency. Though it might bring some inefficiencies to the network but then it becomes the collaborative agenda to solve the inefficiencies in the system. The reason, why we are collaborating with someone, is to remove the overall inefficiency and to provide a good customer experience. So, that’s the approach, more and more organizations are trying to collaborate. It’s just that you need to know with whom and at what level you need to integrate with your partner. To gain proficiency in the services which you wish to offer to your customers.

Q4. In the logistics segment, first, come the retail market and the industrial customer are not expecting faster shipments and more transparencies in a competitive market. So how do you handle such requirements?

Answer: For anybody in the supply chain domain, a customer is a customer. We do not differentiate between B2B and B2C. We Understand the business and requirements of customers completely and we have to be 100% transparent to whether a B2B or B2C customer. The idea is that we try to build in some technological tools, so that the visibility, tracking opportunity, and regular MISs are being shared with them. Where is the shipment, why is the delay, what is causing the delay, and how can we control it going further. For a service provider or an industry that is providing solutions to B2B, B2C it does not discriminate.

Q5. A new symbol is being noticed in logistics for retail customers i.e. 10 min delivery that a lot of e-commerce providers are providing, what are your opinions about it?

Answer: 10 min delivery in India is currently at its boom. Everybody is trying to achieve it, it is now coming to a threshold which everybody wants to offer. It is indeed a good service for customers because that is actually transforming the supply chain completely. For the customers, it is a very good thing to have but for the organization, it is the art of burning a lot of costs. To measure the inventory standards to be kept at a dark store, how much to open, how many to be opened, and what will be the manpower. All these questions are currently being answered by the cost and it burns a lot of money for the organizations.

From a customer point of view, it is a very good thing but I think the industry still has to work on a module that we all can offer via a single platform. If that happens, probably everybody could end up having some monetary relief and a good profit margin.

Q6. How do you see an international shipment in domestic logistics, what are the major differences that you follow during international shipments?

For international shipments, the approach slightly differs from the Indian market. In a sense that we need to understand a lot of laws, rules & regulations of the country, either in exporting or importing. The trade balance between these 2 countries as a supply chain or managing import operations needs to be aware of the rules & regulations part it. Also, INCO terms have to be looked into, what is applicable, what is not, and why is applicable. The only difference could be shipping on a higher side of air, more cost probably. The rules of other countries also need to be kept in mind. An African country will not entertain certain types of things, the US will not allow a certain set of things, all these need to be kept in mind while dealing in international shipments.

Q7. A lot of technologies are coming into the logistics domain, what do you think about this digital technology, is it prerequisite for success in logistics?

Answer: Had it been the 1990-2002s era, I would have said that probably an IT setup will not be a prerequisite for success. But from 2010, when the boom in India, I think every sector in India is trying to improve its IT aspect. For example, for transportation, you have to use a TMS(transport management system). It will tell you optimally which vehicle to be used, at what cost, and who does the best work. We also see a lot of predictive analysis going on in terms of data science operations, while we cater for the requirements of customers.

So IT is something which is the essence going for what. The better the IT sector of your organization is, the stronger you will be in the upcoming years. Any organization that wish to explore reaching a good customer base and satisfaction, good numbers and revenues have to invest in IT support. Because even in the supply chain, a lot of problems could be solved using good IT setups. We are dealing with lot of information sharing from customers.

Q8. How do you keep yourself updated on the logistics trends and practices?

Answer: For any professional or student or someone who is trying to enter this ecosystem, there are a few things which people must continue to do. One is to continue learning i.e. what Vskills provide, a lot of certifications could be granted. You can definitely learn a lot of contexts, as a certified logistics professional and try to gain a particular knowledge. So Vskills could be one part of it. Another could be being aware of the local market, what is going on in the market, which policy is coming from, listening to debates, refer to magazines. logistics inside is a magazine that provides you insides, also you can do more certification courses. There is a CII supply chain-driven course as well. All this helps in keeping interacting with industry individuals. LinkedIn is a very important tool to operate, it is not just a job portal anymore.

For someone who is trying to gain some skills and knowledge, these are the key points, to begin with.

Q9. What do you think the logistics market will look like in the next 5 years?

Answer: A lot of manufacturing moving toward the e-commerce domain. E-commerce is getting stronger, government laws will be in place so that they can control the entire dynamic which was not there in the previous segment. There will be more strong laws to drive it, also manufacturing is moving towards it. E-commerce seems to contribute a lot to the GDP growth of the country. From the logistics perspective, there is a balance of trade between roadways and railways. Currently, we are dominating with roadways. A lot of infrastructures are going to be developed in coming years, although I see an inclination towards railways due to fuel factors. We are trying to move into the better segment of it still railways are in a bigger part.

So logistics is being seen to grow and give more opportunities to the individuals and become a good revenue generator for the country. We can solve a lot of problems in the country by having a good logistics system. A lot of development is happening and more control mechanism is driven by the government.

Q10. What is your advice to the students who are looking to build careers in Logistics and SCM fields?

Answer: For somebody who is trying to get into supply chain logistics in India, you will have to be the patient. If any young student reads this if you expect your CTC on day one to be x-number or have exponential growth. Probably that is not going to happen, this particular domain requires a lot of experience before you get into a decision-making role. You need to understand that in the supply chain, you have to be more experienced, you have to see and broaden your entire mind in such a way that you take up the right decision, as it affects a customer directly. You need to change your thinking process.

The only advice is to be patient in your initial years and learn as, much as possible. Even after completion of your degree, try to attain knowledge for a few years. Only then you can see exponential growth inters of CTC, profile and everything else.

Q1. What interests you in getting into the field of logistics and supply chain management?

Answer: After finishing my education in mechanical engineering I started my career with Larsen and Toubro in 2010. I was placed through campus placement there and then I joined them in their hydrocarbon business, that time it was called refinery sq. After 1 year my training got completed in the design department and engineering. Then I moved to supply chain management out of my interest. I chose this career while pursuing MBA according to my work. It interests me to manage the things which are moving, so I decided to choose my career in supply chain management and logistics management.

What got me into logistics was that Logistics challenges you every day, project logistics is something which is not happening on daily basis. It gives the opportunity to interact with each and every function in logistics. In logistics, there is an engineering department, project management department, and finance department. Therefore, you have to carry the multi-dimensional approach. your interpersonal skills also get nurtured since every decision you make today is going to impact your project schedule, sales, and business revenue. It does not restrict you with geographical boundaries.

Q2. What skills do you think are needed to be successful in logistics and supply chain management?

Answer: When we come to specific skills, the first and the foremost thing required is analytical skills because when you have to make a decision, many facts and figures need to be figured out. Interpersonal skills are also required for the same. it will include collaborating with different departments where interpersonal skills are required. Adaptability to change is another major factor required here. How things worked 4 years ago, does not work the same way. It also requires people to work on the ground to meet the people who are carrying out the work of logistic operations. Understanding their problems, and talking to vendors, and brokers so working on the ground skills is also required.

Q3. We are observing horizontal collaboration in last-mile delivery, but it is affected by inconsistencies. How can a higher level of efficiency be achieved?

Answer: We are facing the same issue since the remote locations are creating challenges for the last-mile delivery. Logistics is an unorganized sector, only 5-7% of logistics players are utilizing their IT resources efficiently. Infrastructural issues are also there. Sometimes approachable roads are not available, for last-mile delivery vehicles are not available. Even the market does not seem to fix the concerned issues. Federal issues are also there since there are interstate movements, and there are different regulatory requirements. What we do to overcome this is, collaborate with local vendors over there i.e. local logistics service providers. We try to collaborate in such a way that movements happen smoothly to cope with last-mile challenges. If federal and infrastructural-related issues get resolved things could be carried out efficiently.

Q4. Just like individual customers, industrial customers expect to get shipments faster, flexibly, and with more transparency at a competitive price. How do you handle such requirements?

Answer: Logistics is one of the most unorganized sectors in India. There is still a reluctance to adopt IT, still, many service providers do not use IT apps. It is required for them to use IT-enabled platforms for real-time monitoring. There are various applications available like mytruck which can trace the exact location of the vehicle, how much time it will take, what is the speed etc.

Q5. Logistics is currently confronting immense change in terms of digitalization and evolving customer expectations. This brings both risk and opportunity. What is your opinion about it?

Answer: About 10-15 years ago, the support from statutory bodies was not available, but in the last 7-8 years it is getting improved. Getting permissions for doing movements is getting easier now, the type of permission which was taking 45-50 days is now reduced to only 7-8 days. Along with opportunities, the risk is also associated. Sometimes, logistics needs huge capital investment, even if you mobilize only 1 vehicle, the cost is around 15-20 lakhs rupees. It can be mitigated by using IT resources, technology and using infrastructure in a better way.

Q6. Technology is changing every aspect of how logistics companies operate. Do you think digital fitness is a prerequisite for success in this sector?

Answer: It is impacting very deeply. Last year amazon also started taking delivery addresses only, if you don’t want to purchase, you can still courier it. They have developed their infrastructure available in the country. They have set up their delivery offices everywhere. Apart from their home deliveries, they are taking orders from their customers and courier companies as well. That is how they are managing their infrastructure.

Q7. What is the biggest challenge for building digital operations capabilities in a company?

Answer: Major challenges include a low literacy rate amongst the operators, drivers and people who are working on the ground. People are too much reluctant in learning new things. If I talk about my experience in the previous organization we were using an app called mytrucks, but here the drivers are not ready to download the apps. Secondly, driving and delivering is considered a low profile job in India. It is the last option for the people who are not getting jobs, this mindset needs to get changed. Talking about infrastructural issues, I think they will get resolved in 4-5 years.

Q8. What are the key technologies you think are really going to make an impact to handle the technical advancement?

Answer: Using IOT internet, AI, warehousing automation, and robotics even if you go to any amazon fulfilment center, you will find that their boxes are being managed by robots, which reduces the time and therefore things are available must faster. Now every company is focusing on faster delivery like in 10-30 mins. They are also controlling the information flow apart from the physical flow.

Q9. How do you stay up to date with industry trends and best practices?

Answer: Firstly, you need to stay connected with the market and be available with your business associates, partners, service providers etc. Having connections with digital media also matters a lot, learn about the new things happening, and try to implement them with your best practices. When I initiated taking up a project on warehouses while completing it I learned many new things.

Q10. What will the logistics marketplace look like in the coming five years?

Answer: The gap in accessibility which was a major issue, not everyone was able to send their shipments, go to the broker, transformer, or transport area has improved a lot over a period of time. Now, you can contact the service providers on phone, they will come to your home. They are also offering a platform to choose the service as per your convenience by putting the dimensions of the shipments, destination pin code, and pickup pin code. Major accessibility is the major change which I am looking for in the next 5 years. Apart from this digitally enabled, elimination of middlemen like brokers, and associations will also help a lot.

Q11. What is your advice for people who are looking at building a career in this field?

Answer: It is a very interesting field, there are so many new things to be learnt. Today the manufacturing cost and engineering cost are almost the same for all the companies. They can clear the value in supply chain management and logistics management only. If any company is having efficient supply chain management, their product cost will be less. No. of raw materials suppliers is the same for every company. The company which have more logistic competency will have a more cost impact on their product. So they can sustain their product in a better way while working on their supply chain. Therefore, students must explore this domain as it provides so many improvements and scope.
