Two basic technologies in mobile phones, CDMA and GSM represent a gap you can’t cross. They’re the reason you can’t use many Reliance[CDMA] phones on Vodafone’s network and vice versa. But what does CDMA vs. GSM really mean for you?

CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobiles) are shorthand for the two major radio systems used in cell phones. Both acronyms tend to group together a bunch of technologies run by the same entities.

Most of the world uses GSM nowadays. The global spread of GSM came about because in 1987, Europe mandated the technology by law, and because GSM comes from an industry consortium. What we call CDMA, by and large, is owned by chipmaker Qualcomm. This made it less expensive for third parties to build GSM equipment.

For call quality, the technology you use is much less important than the way your carrier has built its network. There are good and bad CDMA and GSM networks, but there are key differences between the technologies.

It’s much easier to swap phones on GSM networks, because GSM carriers put customer information on a removable SIM card. Take the card out, put it in a different phone, and the new phone now has your number. What’s more, to be considered GSM, a carrier must accept any GSM-compliant phone. So the GSM carriers don’t have total control of the phone you’re using.

That’s not the case with CDMA. In the U.S., CDMA carriers use network-based white lists to verify their subscribers. That means you can only switch phones with your carrier’s permission, and a carrier doesn’t have to accept any particular phone onto its network. It could, but typically, U.S. carriers choose not to.

3G CDMA networks (known as “EV-DO” or “Evolution Data Optimized”) also, generally, can’t make voice calls and transmit data at the same time. Once more, that’s an available option (known as “SV-DO” for “Simultaneous Voice and Data Optimization”), but one that U.S. carriers haven’t adopted for their networks and phones.

On the other hand, all 3G GSM networks have simultaneous voice and data, because it’s a required part of the spec. (3G GSM is also actually a type of CDMA.)

So why did so many U.S. carriers go with CDMA? Timing. When Verizon’s predecessors and Sprint switched from analog to digital in 1995 and 1996, CDMA was the newest, hottest, fastest technology. It offered more capacity, better call quality and more potential than the GSM of the day. GSM caught up, but by then those carriers’ paths were set.

It’s possible to switch from CDMA to GSM. Bell and Telus in Canada have done it, to get access to the wider variety of off-the-shelf GSM phones. But Verizon and Sprint are big enough that they can get custom phones built for them, so they don’t see the need to waste money switching 3G technologies when they could be building out their 4G networks.

On 21st April, Google launched a major update on its mobile search engine that would rank websites on the basis of their “mobile-friendliness”. What this means is that websites which have large texts, easy-to-click links and ability to resize their content to whatever screen sized it is being viewed on will be ranked higher in their search. Websites which are not mobile friendly will get demoted.

Considering the fact the Google is the leading search engine, and 50% of the web searches are made on phones, this could cause a huge drop in the traffic of the websites which have not updated the mobile version of their websites. They will appear less frequently on your search list. Because of the apocalyptic implications it can have on some of the websites, this update has been nicknamed “Mobile-geddon”.

Earlier, Google used to emphasize on relevancy in deciding which website will feature first in your search. But now, it also gives equal weightage to user friendliness. What it says is that if the content is good, but it’s not readable, then that is not a very good sign. Other than it removing “spam” from the internet, it is really a way of imposing Google’s vision on how the web should be like, using its search engine as a leverage to force site owners in its directions.

Itai Sadan, CEO of website building company Duda, says, “Small businesses are seen at greater risk because they have a higher likelihood of not knowing about the update, or not having the time or resources to make the change.” In its defence, Google announced about this update in late February, giving site owners almost two months to making any necessary updates in their websites.

This update will have plunging effects on small and medium-sized businesses. With no net neutrality already threatening them, this update might just well give them the final shove. A drop in their rankings could lead to serious decline in their online traffic, which could lead to a loss of thousands of dollars. Such companies might not have the adequate resources to bring the necessary changes in their websites. A large number of these companies might not have enough money to pay overworked web developers to create a new user friendly website for mobile users. Some of them might not even have heard that such a change was going to happen.

What Google wants is to create a web which is far easier to use, which is something that all users want as well. But this is another way of Google’s pushing site owners to work according to its whims. Although this update will not be reflected in desktop and tablet searches, but it can still disrupt the ranking of the websites worldwide, in the search engines of all languages.

Google, the apex IT firm, is about to make a huge change in the coming days – Mobile-Geddon!  The announced move basically would change the order in which websites are ranked during a Google search on their mobile phones on the basis of their mobile-friendliness.  The change may  affect some of the less tech- savvy small organizations or the SMEs badly. They are going to hit pretty low when it comes to the number of website visitors. 

Google had announced this move back in February. Therefore, the webmasters were given enough time and information to bring up these changes and keep their websites from going down on Google rating.

This move has even been named as ‘Mobile-Geddon’ owing to the fact that it could be catastrophic for many of the websites. This move is to help users by boosting the Google Search ranking of the mobile-friendly websites. So, the users would now not be redirected to the pages that are not so smartphone friendly.

So, there are a few tips that can help the content marketers to face this strong move by Google –

1. Understand Google’s Vision –

The webmasters were already informed by Google of it upcoming move. Besides, the move although ranks the websites on the major parameter of being mobile friendly, there are a number of other parameters also to rank search result. One of such parameter could be high-quality content when the internet is full of mobile kinks. Apart from this, you can continue optimizing your website. It is not a permanent punishment.

2. Action is Imminent

This is for those websites who aren’t perturbed by Mobile-Geddon because they think that the traffic on their website isn’t mobile-driven. 4. Keep it Simple

So, there might be huge MNCs with huge technical budgets who still aren’t able to meet the evaluation. And, there may be small start-ups with restrained budgets who with the smart use of technology would rise up above on Google’s Parameter. The design of the website, therefore, should be simple & responsive. It should allow your page to load fast and help the users to share and link your content with much ease. And hence, this implies that the Google’s bots would be gaining more efficiency and speed while indexing your website’s content. Webmasters can also use the adaptive web design approach. This converts the HTML code of the website on mobile automatically. However, the detection of user-agent may produce errors. Therefore, simplicity is the best option for increasing mobile-friendliness.

5. Content Optimization Is Important

As important as making your website mobile friendly, it is also important that pay attention to the content of you website. Make it more mobile-friendly as well. Here’s how you can accomplish this –

1. Headlines should be short & entertaining. The font type be such that the text is legible. The hyperlinks should be at enough distance to keep users from bumping onto the wrong link.
2. The important content should be placed at the top of the page. Users should not need to scroll down much to see the entire content.
3. Users shouldn’t have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the website. So, try that you put your call to action amongst your content.

    6. Own the Responsibility

It’s not that the Mobile-Geddon was an out of the blue action. Google’s test has been around since February. Plus, with most of the traffic on websites coming from mobile, and the number increasing at such a huge pace. Therefore, if you face plummeting of the website traffic, nobody but you are responsible.
