Organizing is one of the important functions of management. It refers to identifying and grouping of different activities in the organization and bringing together human, physical and financial resources to achieve certain goals which benefit the organization as well as it’s stake holders which include the employees, key managerial personnel, the shareholders, creditors, outside parties, etc.

However, for the function of organizing to be effective and suitable, certain steps need to be followed by the organizations to reach their goals accurately and precisely:

1) Identification and division of work: The first step involves identifying the actual and relevant work to be done. After this identification, it needs to be carefully divided and spread amongst the different departments and sections of the firm for early completion and avoiding duplication of activity

2) Departmentalization: This step involves combining and grouping of various similar and related jobs into larger units or sections called departments. Departments can be created on the basis of productive functions, customers, geographical boundaries etc.

3) Assignment of Duties: Once the work has been identified and the suitable departments created, it is necessary to assign jobs to various employees working in the different sections of the firm. Duties are assigned in accordance with skills and qualifications.

Organizing is critical as well as important in every organization due to the following reasons:
1) It leads to systematic allocation of jobs amongst the workforce which further leads to reduction in workload as well as enhancement of productivity

2) The organizing process clarifies working relationships and clearly specifies who is to report to whom which thus reduces any scope for confusions

3) It leads to efficient and effective utilization of human, financial and material resources which in turn results in proper assignment of jobs and hence use of the above resources in the best possible manner

4) This process allows a firm to accommodate changes in the dynamic business environment. Even though the changes cannot be predicted cent percent, but proper organizing methods helps a firm to survive and grow and not get much affected by external shocks.

Restaurant Team Management – keeping the kitchen and front office together

Management is a concept and term that is used and implemented in almost every industry in this growing world. The food industry, also known as the Culinary Industry is one of the fastest growing industries of the twenty first century. Catering to billions each year, it includes restaurants, pubs, bars, brasseries, cafes, patisseries and fast food chains.

Management in the restaurant industry, is a term that broadly unites the two separate but dependent sectors essential for running a restaurant, they are- The kitchen and the front house. Headed by the head- sommelier, who ideally has a complete understanding of the list of wine, food menus, and beverage items at all times and the general manager with their team of commis waiters, (also known as a commis de rang) and waiters are solely responsible for the overall experience of the restaurant. From the linen and the crockery of the restaurant or hotel or cafe or patisserie, taking the deliveries each day, to handling the reservations or the wine pairing, etc, the front house does it all.

But most importantly, what is to be noted, is that they are the communication channel between the kitchen and the costumers who come to the restaurant. The kitchen, run by the head chef and his brigade is generally divided into sections. Ranging from the cold larder (cold starters), hot larder (hot starters), ganish, meat and fish, sauce, and the patisserie, each headed by a chef de partie, also known as the line cook or station chef. In large kitchens, station chefs usually get help from a demi-chef de partie, commis or trainee chef. One of the main responsibilities of the Station or line cook is to help the sous chef and head chef to develop new dishes and menus.

As mentioned earlier, the management in the culinary industry is as critical as management in any other industry.

Managerial Economics- why effective human skills are important to develop professional managers

With the expansion of Liberalization Privatization and Globalization (L.P.G.) policies and in this era of a non-static global business environment, it is essential as well as important to develop competent managerial talent for making resources useful and achieving high levels of competitiveness and productivity in organizations.

The concepts of Managerial Economics aim at nourishing the students with effective human and conceptual skills, along with comprehensive knowledge & principles of achievement to develop students as dedicated, devoted, responsible, and active managers.
It helps them in honing their hidden talent, sparking their curiosity, developing leadership qualities amongst them and the ability to influence and change their institute and society in totality in a positive, significant and harmonious manner; thereby enabling them to reach the pinnacle of their potential and capabilities.

The core objective of the subject is to use the micro-economic concepts and involve their application in evaluating business decisions, which are routinely taken by firms at every level and scale. The emphasis is on understanding how the tools of standard price theory can be engaged or employed to devise a decision trouble or difficulty, evaluate alternative courses of action and finally choose among alternatives.

Economics as a concept when used in practice as well as in real life situations is unbounded in nature, that is, it does not have any finite end to it with the main principle being ‘human wants are not limited in nature’, starting from essential and indispensable household needs of pricing and demand, analyzing the various bundles of goods available in the market, buying a portfolio of securities, evaluating the risks involved in taking and making some decisions, to calculating the Gross Domestic and Gross National Product of a nation, the list is endless.

Managerial economics till a certain degree is dogmatic in nature as it suggests course of action to a managerial problem. Problems can be related to a variety of departments in an organisation like production, accounts, sales, etc.

Almost any business decision can be analyzed with managerial economic techniques.

Since the economic theory as a subject has its horizons in almost every area of work, the career prospects are abundant; a person can enter the field of marketing, become a financial adviser, stock broker, an analyst, an entrepreneur, etc.

Bachelor of Business Administration and Management (Financial Investment Analysis) – the name sounds so grand and important. Surely, it must involve complex and technical subjects, a high degree of specialization and an overall esoteric course structure. It is no wonder then, that a subject like Advanced Communicative English (ACE) comes as a slight disappointment. It is admitted, that this is the common initial reaction for everyone as well. However, after just a few weeks of studying and understanding the subject, people realize that they are under a misconception – one that no doubt exists in the minds of majority of people.

Contrary to popular belief, the subject does not aim to simply teach people english the way they were taught at a school level – rather, it helps us develop the invaluable skill of business communication. Advanced Communicative English gives us the requisite knowledge of how to interact in a corporate and formal setting and helps us communicate our thoughts in a structured, confident and appropriate manner. After all, our analysis would be of no use were we not able to communicate the results effectively and efficiently as and when required.

As any Advanced Communicative English professor is fond of remarking, communication also plays a significant role in earning the respect of peers and is an indispensable tool to all managers in every sphere of their work life. In the management world, where new ideas are continuously being exchanged, explored and refined, communication is a key tool in ensuring their successful interpretation and implementation. As this world evolves, it becomes more important than ever to understand the constant changes, adapt to them and react accordingly – something possible only through proper channels of interaction.

In today’s world, it is very important to create a place and standing for a person in the corporate industry.

When we think about the word Leadership, the words inspiration and motivation come to our minds. A manager or an employer can be a good leader only when he or she has the capability to enthuse, motivate, inspire and build respect for themselves with their employees or colleagues.

Leadership, a word so strong in itself, yet comes with a bag full of liabilities as well as assets. think of leadership and automatically words like power, authority, responsibility, team work, passion, hard work, diligence, inspiration, motivation, etc start rushing through our mind. Have you ever thought about what it really takes to be a successful leader? Yes, everyone wants to be a leader but not everyone has it in them to become one. It takes a lot of effort to win the support and trust of people to begin with and then living up to the expectations and promises made to everyone, is not a cake walk for sure.

We need to remember that under leadership, power and responsibility are two sides of the same coin. As a leader, one needs to make sure that the whole team working with he or she functions as one and everyone moves forward and together on the path of success. It is no longer about one person but the whole team. A good leader will assess the strengths and weaknesses of all the members and will assign roles which will be appropriate as per their potential and capabilities and push them to work accordingly.

A good leader is the one who is responsive to the team’s needs and opinions and not someone who work according to themselves. As a leader, you just don’t have to know your way but, show and pave the way for themselves and for others as well. But we must remember one important thing, leaders are not born, but created.

There is much that goes into the making of news. Sitting in front of a TV screen one can have no idea of the hustle bustle of the newsroom and how hordes of people work each day to ensure that every tiny little detail falls into place at the right time for the the news of the moment to reach the general public. If Television journalism is your interest then an internship at a media corporation is the best place to start. The timings are a little tough, and most likely will include lee real late nights. The amount of work varies, and also depends on whether you’re working in a bureau or the Head Office.

Ideally, many media houses have a three month internship course, whereby the intern can spend one month in each department and get a sound understanding of how all units work together to create news. However, in the matter of length there is much flexibility and the intern can work for anywhere between 4-12 weeks.
The first week for any and every intern is spent in the library. The library is where logging and archiving of all the video content of that particular news channel is done. The recording of the day’s events from all over are first ingested into the server of the channel and then the tape is sent to the library for the footage to be archived.

On most days there are usually 4 tapes. Of around 3 hours each. On some days, in case of a big newsworthy event there can even be 5. It is undeniably a tedious job which requires the person to carefully watch the footage, dump it into an empty cassette all the while carefully writing a short description of the various events along with the names of the individuals covered by the camera (spell checked of course, for an easy search in case the footage is ever required in the future) onto the computer screen next to you, along with the time span of that particular clip, precise to the second if not frame.
The next part of the internship is spent in the editing bay. If one is familiar with the software then there’s nothing to it. You can get to making practise packages in no time. However, even if one is unfamiliar with the technology it doesn’t take much time to grasp the basics. A week or two’s dedicated practise can give you enough semblance of how simple editing works and enable you to create bins, cuts bytes and make simple packages. The only real work an intern does in the editing bay is get videos the editors may require for the day ingested and sometimes, cut bytes of pre recorded footage of reporters. The work in the editing bay only starts after 6, when the stories for prime time news have been decided and the packages start coming in. Ingesting videos requires a significant amount of legwork and entails running from the library to the Ingest room and back.
After this, the intern spends some time in the Production Control Room, often abbreviated to the PCR. Here, the intern learns the basics of production and graphics and comes to understand what exactly goes in making the news show and its presentation. Towards the end of an intern’s tenure he/she may be even allowed to tag along with a reporter to an event they are covering so as to get a feel of how reporting and shooting works.
In a short span of time, media internships are a great way to gain the feel of the workplace atmosphere and culture of TV news. There’s much to learn and the people in the industry are very generally very genial and welcoming. It’s the news industry, so everyone has something to talk and if you listen you might even pick up a few things. Of course, if nothing else the very least you will come away with in such an internship is a formidable knowledge of current affairs.

Changing streams after graduating from school seems like a very daunting task for students; coming from something as intricate as science to as meticulous as commerce and management is indeed a challenge. But what helps ease this process is the subjects and the courses being taught at the undergraduate colleges of our delhi university, for example say, at Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies.

One of the most important subjects under the Financial Investment Analysis stream is ‘Financial Accounting’. It deals with various aspects of accounting with respect to a business or a management firm and primarily revolves around recording, classifying and summarising the financial transactions of the said businesses.

Being in an undergraduate management college, studying a subject like financial accounting actually gives the students an edge over the other students in related fields because here they centre their focus on what actually drives the entire managerial world, they look at the intricacies of day to day book keeping and then link to the much bigger role: management.

The world is changing at a fast speed and its developing into a more open and transparent market, not just for the corporates, but also for the consumers. So in an age like ours, equipping the students with the knowledge and awareness of how to tackle these very changing scenarios and how to take these challenges and turning them into opportunities is exactly what the subject aims at.

Talking more on the lines of management, financial accounting gives every student that access and insight into what eventually runs a business or any firm, and that is its finance. Financial accounting empowers the soon-to-be managers and provides them with critical thinking skills and a logical outlook through its various complicated, yet structured course content.

To conclude, this subject hones the minds of the students who have an inclination towards management and also proves to be an asset in the overall scheme of management training and education.

In this competitive world, everyone has to make their own space and standing in the society. Mostly, young people have the ideas to start their own businesses but don’t have the capital or resources to invest in them, or sometimes people have the capital but don’t have the ideas to start any business. There also cases where people have established businesses but the growth of their businesses are stagnant.

To be successful entrepreneurs and managers in this growing and viable world of business, the youth of our country have to be well spoken, extremely confident, vigilant and dynamic in their nature. The business world needs them to be creative thinkers who have the ability to think out of the box. For entrepreneurs to be successful, they have to be good delegators who are strong-headed, determined, independent young people who have the aptitude to take risks in life and their business.

They are expected to be open- minded entrepreneurs in the managerial world, who are ready to learn and adapt to new things taught to them, which could be learnt by them by interning at organizations or firms which gives them the opportunity to broaden their horizons. They ought to be good planners and good implementers and executers of the plans in their head. Only planning won’t make them good entrepreneurs, rather, their plans need to be put into action and then followed up on.

Managers and entrepreneurs need to have the courage, will power and focus to be strong in the business world. Most importantly, they need to believe in themselves and their ideas, have good leadership skills and positivity in their thinking that could add to their potential and shape their future. A diligent team-worker, go- getter and a person who has the courage to face difficulties makes the best entrepreneur and manager.

Change is constant, as we all know, and that is why there have been so many advances in the world of business and technology over time. Because of so many developments in science, new ways have come up to help run businesses. For example, in earlier times, a business would maintain its client database in a notebook or in some cases, not even have one. But in today’s world, it is extremely important to keep a record of who a business is dealing with such as clients, leads, accounts and related opportunities. Nowadays, businesses maintain such records electronically using software, which is termed as Customer Relationship Management (CRM).

CRM is basically a way of handling a company’s relations with current as well as prospective clients and customers. The software synchronizes and coordinates marketing, sales, technical support and customer service. CRM software helps businesses not only keep data systematically, but also satisfy their customers and clients better. For instance, it would have been harder to keep a record of clients’ birthdays, family members, etc. in earlier times. But in modern times, it is much easier thanks to CRM software. It makes it possible for the business to send out cards, gifts and mail to them, showing them that it is not just strictly official business. It allows the business to forge a relationship with its customers and clients that goes beyond the business they do together, which gives them satisfaction. CRM software also allows a business to keep track of social media network accounts of their clients, which further allows them to know of their personal tastes and preferences.

It seems as if CRM software is the present and future of managing client relations and keeping them for a long time. Without proper management, CRM database software is just another tool that the business owns. But if maintained properly, it can change business processes and turn them from slow to flow.

Chanel, Hermes, Gucci, Armani are some popular high fashion names in the industry. Where do they make products of such high quality and status? Is it Paris for Hermes or Italy for Gucci and Armani? The answer to this is an absolute no. We belong to a country of master craftsmanship, and due to our over-sized population and cheap labour. India is a place which is rich in resources and manpower at very reasonable prices. In order to find out about how it works, let us assume the example of a company called ABC who exports to a very popular brand of United Kingdom called ‘Hugo Boss’.

ABC exports not only manufacture the finest quality of garments but also aids them with design solutions. The process begins with our trend research. There is an identity to every brand, which in this case is clean and classic silhouettes. Hugo Boss, every season sends their look, styles and colours. Amalgamating this information with the buyers’ requirements, samples of garments, are created. They are then sent to the brand’s head office for approval. The approved samples are sent back for mass production.

From design to sampling, they work only on concepts. The real task is the production. Production involves procurement of materials, arranging production lines, manpower and ensuring even quality throughout the process. Post productions, each piece is thoroughly checked for any defects or flaw. The buyer may want to conduct quality audits in between the production process. The approved garments are then shipped to the buyer and are ready for launch in the season to come next. The rejected garments are then sent to local markets, retailers and wholesalers.

When the garment produced by an Indian export house in India is launched globally with a tag of the foreign buyer, the prices become sky high. Our country needs to realize the potential in ready-to-wear fashion and accept Indian brands. It is only about the tag the garment holds, rest everything else remains the same.
