Applying Adult Learning Theory

There are five major assumptions regarding to the characteristics of adult learners. You can use them to get some help in creating significant learning experiences for adult learners. Here are the five assumptions for applying adult training theory.

Assumption 1: Self-concept

Mature learners gather new information and build upon the existing understanding and skills more effectively than the young learners who may need some extra guidance throughout the whole learning process. In addition to this adult learners get more out of the experiences if they work independently.

Assumption 2: Adult learner experience

To appeal to various adult learners, it’s best to include a variety of instructional theories into your learning program. Survey them to recognize if any technical skill they have, and also to evaluate their education levels. This will help you to build learning experiences that are informative and engaging.

Assumption 3: Readiness to learn

Add some social media and online tools to tie the learning to social development. Create activities that can encourage adult learners to use social media and other online platforms effectively. This can help them to build their social network and also to collaborate with those having the same interests.

Assumption 4: Orientation to learning

Emphasize how the subject matter can solve the difficulties that an adult learner faces repeatedly. Adult learners need to know the why and when before they get engage in the learning process.

Assumption 5: Motivation to learn

There must be a valid reason behind each and every learning activity. You need to motivate the adult learners to let them learn effectively. For this, provide them reasons for every learning activity, assessment, and module they require to complete the training.
