The horrific sci-fi movie where machines replace humans and take over the world is becoming a reality, little by little. Tasks that were once deeply human-centric are now being handed over to automated systems designed to optimize and simplify our lives. But this shift comes at a cost—many people are losing jobs they’ve built their careers around. In this changing landscape, understanding the difference between upskilling vs reskilling becomes crucial. Only those who adapt and acquire high-demand, machine-resistant skills can stay ahead. For example, earning an AML KYC Certification not only keeps you relevant in the compliance and finance sector but also sets you apart from automation. Today, you’re not just competing with coworkers—you’re competing with intelligent algorithms that learn faster, adapt quicker, and never sleep.

If you are a graduate fresh out of college looking for jobs and how you can uplift your resume, this blog is going to be your cup of tea. If you are already a seasoned professional who is stuck in their job and wants to consider tapping into other fields and sectors as well will find this blog eye-opening. You have unlimited options and resources at your disposal. All that is required is for you to take a step forward and get insights on resources you never knew existed. Every small piece of information can turn out to be valuable when you want it to be.

In this blog, we are going to talk about the options of upskilling and reskilling. These processes can change your entire outlook regarding your professional life, and maybe you will find something you never knew you were looking for.

What do you understand by Upskilling?

Upskilling is the process of learning new competencies or improving current ones to stay relevant and excel in your existing role or industry. It involves acquiring advanced techniques, technologies, or methodologies that enhance your ability to perform better at your current job. It doesn’t necessarily mean switching careers, but it means growing within your current career path by becoming more proficient and adaptable in areas that are rapidly evolving.

Why is it important?

New platforms and tools regarding them are emerging day by day, and their importance is increasing like nothing else. Keeping up with the changing trends is important to make steady growth in your career.

Having as many skills as possible you can acquire never hurts anyone. Personally, it makes your job easier as you make fewer mistakes as compared to your previous work. Your speed to do your projects increases as skills make you aware of what you are actually doing and how to do it properly.

As the company or the business is a separate entity can adopt various new technology changes, they demand a new skill set. To cope with the rapidly growing market, you have to take some time out to acquire the necessary skills.

Employees who does not offer something unique and out of the box turn out to be redundant after some time. Improving your skills regularly keeps you on top of the priority list to avoid unemployment in times of recession.

Upskilling opens positions in leadership roles and makes a strong case for promotion.

Example

Imagine you are a Digital Marketer. Your day-to-day involves running ad campaigns, writing copy, analyzing engagement, and tracking conversions. However, the marketing landscape is shifting due to AI and automation.

To stay competitive, you decide to upskill by learning:

AI-powered analytics tools like:

Google Analytics 4 (GA4): for real-time and predictive analysis

ChatGPT / Generative AI: for content creation and customer interaction automation

Predictive modeling tools: to forecast campaign outcomes and audience behavior

By achieving this, you are now a more valuable team member who can drive better results, adapt to future trends, and potentially move into strategic marketing roles like Growth Manager.

Profession

Traditional skills

Upskills

Teacher

Classroom instruction

Digital teaching platforms (Google Classroom, Zoom), online course design

HR Manager

Recruitment, payroll

People analytics, HR tech systems, diversity and inclusion training

Sales executive

Cold calling, CRM

AI-assisted lead generation, automation tools, data-driven selling

Finance Analyst

Excel, basic analysis

Python/R for data analysis, advanced financial modeling, Power BI dashboards

What is Reskilling?

Reskilling is the process of learning new skills that are required for an entirely different job function or industry. Unlike upskilling, which enhances your existing role, reskilling is about making a career shift—either by choice or necessity.

Reskilling is often pursued when:

Your current job role is becoming obsolete

Industry shifts demand new talent in emerging fields

You want to change career paths for better opportunities or personal growth

Why is it important?

It helps to start a new role in a different field setting. Shift to a different role that aligns better with current market demand or personal interests can always be challenging, but once acquired, it proves to be worthwhile.

In the time of recession or even of being laid off, learning new skills always proves to be helpful. Being stuck on a specialization when it’s getting you nowhere is not a smart choice for anyone.

Think about skills in future-ready or future-proof industries. These are those fields that are or are predicted to experience a boom in the coming years. Investing in them from prior on will give great returns in the future. Move into growth sectors like AI, cybersecurity, data science, healthcare, or renewable energy.

Another reason for changing career fields could be something more personal, other than the economic ones. You might not be happy in your current job field and would like to explore other opportunities. Resources are available to provide you with the skills to back up this motivation. Transition to roles that are more meaningful, lucrative, or aligned with your strengths. This increases your job satisfaction and consequently has a healthier work-life balance.

The place you are currently employed at might be shifting its work model. To minimize the percentage of employees laid off, they can be trained in-house to develop the skills the new enterprise is going to demand. Employees may be reskilled as companies evolve digitally (e.g., a manual logistics worker being trained in digital inventory systems).

Example

Imagine you are a Customer Service Representative working in a call center. Due to automation and AI-powered chatbots, many basic customer service functions are being handled without human intervention. The company decides to downsize its service team. Instead of facing unemployment, you choose to reskill in Cybersecurity, an industry facing a global talent shortage.

They go through the following steps:

Initial Learning: Enrolls in beginner-friendly courses like “Introduction to Cybersecurity” and Learns basic networking, ethical hacking, and data protection

Hands-On Training: Participates in simulations and security challenges

Job Transition: Lands an entry-level cybersecurity role such as a Security Operations Center (SOC) Analyst or IT Security Associate

As a result, you have successfully transitioned into a growing, future-proof career despite your previous experience being in a completely different field.

Previous role

New skill

New role

Retail cashier

Spreadsheet tools, data handling, CRM systems

Data entry specialist

Factory worker

Electrical systems, installation techniques, safety training

Solar panel technician

Travel agent

Electrical systems, installation techniques, and safety training

Digital marketing associate

Journalist

User research, web writing, and design thinking

Content strategist

Upskilling vs Reskilling: Why the AI Revolution Makes this a Critical Conversation?

Artificial Intelligence is a transformational force that’s reshaping how we live, work, and learn. From automation to data-driven decision-making, AI is touching every industry, function, and skill set. In this new landscape, upskilling and reskilling are very important to make a successful career.

Impact of AI on job roles and industries

AI technologies are disrupting traditional roles at a very unprecedented scale. It not only replaces human actions, it does a better job at a low cost, which becomes the reason for it being considered a major disruptive force to the job market.

In HR, as a role of a recruiter, AI has taken over the role of a human. AI tools now handle resume screening, initial candidate assessments, and even schedule interviews. To prevent this from happening or surpass AI algorithms, HR professionals must now understand HR tech, data privacy, and analytics.

In the field of finance as an analyst, AI automates budgeting, forecasting, and fraud detection. Now, mere crunching of numbers will not make a career of an analyst, but they must now focus on strategic advisory and interpreting complex AI-generated reports.

As a paralegal, AI systems like eDiscovery and contract review tools automate document analysis. Legal staff need to learn legal tech, compliance software, and data governance. They need to work smart and not hard, like they used to work for hours researching a topic when they had the liberty to.

As a radiologist in the health sector, AI algorithms can detect anomalies in scans with high accuracy. Radiologists must now validate AI outputs and integrate clinical data for final diagnosis. These technicians need to go all out and intertwine AI data with their smartly to keep their jobs.

AI takes over repetitive, data-heavy, or rule-based tasks, freeing up humans to focus on strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, creativity and innovation, and complex decision-making. At the end of the day, we have to remember that these AI tools were created by humans only. There is only so much AI can do. Humans have a greater advantage at their disposal to handle emotionally sensitive interactions, which machines are not capable of doing. Not everyone can perform empathy, and we just have to play on that strength as human beings. So, adaptability becomes the real currency of future employability.

Skills don’t last like they used to

According to the World Economic Forum, 50% of all employees will need reskilling by 2025. Many years back, the roadmap to success was very clear. Years of schooling get you a perfect job, which is your next home for 50 years, followed by retirement. But now, not much can be said about a skill and how long it will last before it gets outdated and loses its value. Research from IBM states that the average shelf life of a technical skill is 2.5 years. Even soft skills like leadership or communication are evolving due to remote work, cross-cultural collaboration, and digital transformation. What you learn today might be partially obsolete in a few years. This means now continuous learning is no longer just a good habit but a survival strategy.

When to Upskilling vs Reskilling?

In today’s fast-evolving job market, staying relevant means more than just keeping up — it means knowing when to upskill and when to reskill. While upskilling focuses on deepening your current abilities to grow in your existing role or industry, reskilling is about pivoting entirely—learning new skills for a different job or career path. But how do you know which path to take? Whether you’re navigating automation, facing industry disruption, or simply feeling stuck in your role, understanding when to upskill vs. when to reskill can be the key to long-term career growth and job security.

Step 1: Ask the Critical Question

“Is my job evolving, or is it disappearing?”

This single question can provide major clarity.

If your job is evolving due to the integration of new technologies or tools, but the role still exists and is in demand, → Upskilling is your path. Example: A graphic designer learning AI-based tools like Adobe Firefly or Midjourney to stay competitive inthe creative industries.

If your job is disappearing due to automation, outsourcing, or industry decline, consider reskilling for a new, growing field. Example: A data entry clerk shifting to data analytics or user support roles as manual input roles get automated.

Step 2: Assess Industry Outlook

Ask yourself:

Is my industry growing, stable, or declining?

Are there emerging roles in my field?

Are job postings still increasing for my current title?

Upskill if your industry is evolving but remains strong vs Reskill if the industry shows signs of decline or mass automation

Step 3: Evaluate the skills you already have

Transferable skills checklist:

Communication

Project management

Problem-solving

Tech literacy

Adaptability

Upskill if most of your skills are still relevant but need updating vs Reskill if your skills aren’t aligning with future-ready job roles

Step 4: Your Personal Interest and Career Goals

Ask yourself:

Am I still motivated by the work I do?

Do I want to grow deeper in this field or start something new?

What brings me long-term satisfaction and meaning?

If you’re passionate but falling behind technically → Upskill vs If you feel stagnant, bored, or disconnected → Reskill

Whether you go deeper (upskill) or change direction (reskill), what matters most is staying proactive, curious, and open to lifelong learning.

HOW TO GET STARTED: YOUR ROADMAP to Upskilling vs Reskilling

Getting started is often the hardest part—but it’s also the most important. Whether you’re launching a new career, learning a new skill, or stepping into an unfamiliar industry, having a clear roadmap can turn uncertainty into action. This guide will walk you through the essential steps, from setting your goals and finding the right resources to staying motivated and tracking your progress. If you’re wondering where to begin, you’re in the right place—because every great journey starts with a solid plan.

What does it take to UPSKILL yourself?

Upskilling yourself takes more than just motivation—it requires a mindset of continuous learning, a willingness to adapt, and the discipline to stay consistent. It starts with identifying the skills that are in demand in your field, setting clear learning goals, and choosing the right resources—be it online courses, certifications, workshops, or real-world projects. But beyond tools and techniques, it takes curiosity, resilience, and a commitment to growth. In a fast-changing job market, upskilling isn’t optional—it’s your competitive edge.

1. Identify skill gaps in your current role

Check current job descriptions for your role on platforms like LinkedIn or Glassdoor.

Use tools like LinkedIn Skill Assessments or Coursera’s SkillSets.

Ask for feedback from managers, peers, or mentors.

2. Pursue Short Courses, Certifications & Micro-Credentials

You don’t need a full degree to stay competitive. Instead, aim for bite-sized learning that’s practical, affordable, and time-efficient.

Digital marketing tools (e.g., Google Ads, HubSpot)

AI for non-tech roles (e.g., prompt engineering, AI-enhanced productivity)

Data literacy (Excel, SQL, Power BI)

Communication, leadership, project management (PMP, Scrum)

Vskills offers certified courses in all the above fields with flexible timings and reasonable rates. These courses can be the turning point of the career which is awaiting just one step of yours.

3. Learn with Others: Mentors, Networks, and Communities

Learning is more effective when it’s social and collaborative.

Join industry-specific LinkedIn groups or communities.

Attend webinars, conferences, or local meetups.

Ask a senior colleague or peer to mentor you during your upskilling journey.

Contribute to open-source projects.

You will gain not only skills but also visibility, confidence, and growth opportunities.

What does it take to RESKILL yourself?

Reskilling yourself means being ready to step out of your comfort zone and embrace change with purpose. It involves learning entirely new skills—often for a different role or even a different industry—which can feel daunting but also deeply rewarding. Reskilling takes self-awareness to recognize when change is needed, research to understand new opportunities, and dedication to start fresh, often from the ground up. Whether driven by automation, layoffs, or personal ambition, reskilling is about reinvention—and the courage to build a new version of your career.

1. Explore New Career Paths Using Trusted Tools

Before fully committing to a field or a skill, you need to gain knowledge about all the resources and opportunities that are out there. But most importantly, you need to figure out what it is that excites and motivates you the most, that is making you consider changing fields.

2. Pursue Intensive Learning

When shifting careers, you may need immersive, hands-on training that delivers job-ready skills fast.

Bootcamps provide a fast-track entry into tech, data, UX, or product management.

Vocational training is ideal for roles requiring certification but not a full degree.

Apprenticeships or paid internships are especially valuable for learning by doing in new fields.

3. Leverage Transferable Skills to Ease the Transition

You’re not starting from scratch—many skills from your previous job can be reused in a new domain.

Common skills like data entry, research, project management etc. And various soft skills like communication and adaptability will come in handy to ease into the transition. Your years of work into something you invested in will never go into waste.

Upskilling vs Reskilling: General Tips

Create a weekly learning schedule (e.g., 1 hour a day or 4 hours on weekends).

Set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Maintain a portfolio: Showcase projects, case studies, or certifications.

Track progress with milestone checklists and personal reflections.

Build an accountability partner system—a friend or colleague who’s also learning.

Expert Corner

For quite some time, there has been a man vs machinery business going on in almost every industry there is to exists. Artificial elements have managed to tap into everywhere and are now working as a threat to everyone’s livelihood. But there is one thing we all have to remind ourselves. You ARE better, you just have to BE better. We were the ones to create this boon and a bane at the same time, so ultimately, the power to use it otherwise falls in our hands only. We just need to be educated enough about our surroundings and take mindful actions to ensure the smooth flow of events. Whether you choose to upskill or reskill, the only wrong move is no move at all. To help you with this transition and make it easier, Vskills offers certified courses in any field you desire. These are issued by India’s largest certification body and approved by the government, which makes it valid all across the globe and highly valuable. All you have to do is take the first step and wait for things to fall into place.

Good Fit for the Job: Back up your enthusiasm with concrete examples that illustrate why you’re the perfect fit for the job. Don’t just claim to have the skills; provide specific examples of how you’ve applied them successfully.

Never Panic: Even in the face of challenging or unexpected questions, maintain your composure. Be prepared for curveballs and focus on delivering your responses professionally.

Exemplify: Share your experiences and accomplishments through storytelling. Engaging the interviewer with real-life stories can make you more memorable and relatable.

Content Writing is a field that has no boundaries or limitations. If you are someone who loves to play with words or loves to express your opinion and viewpoint, then this field is definitely for you. But this does not mean that content writing is only for a specified set of people who carry these skills. This domain is open for everyone, all you have to do is let your imagination run wild and then pen your thoughts down.

You just need to learn how to mould words and sentences that will help attract your reader. However, there are many ways through which you can get started with your career in content writing. The best way, to progress in this field, is learning by doing. However, you can participate in a lot of apprenticeship programs and can do a lot of internships. Or you can even site a blog or website of your own. Let us learn more about content writing and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Let us begin the journey of being a content writer.

What is content writing?

Content writing is an art and the person who excel at this art is successful in all online businesses. Content Writing professionals are in great demand. Companies specializing in content writing and website development are constantly hiring knowledgeable professionals. Various public and private companies also need content writing professional for managing their communications, web presence and other content writing needs.

It can include writing blog posts and articles, scripts for videos and podcasts, as well as content for specific platforms, such as tweetstorms on Twitter or text posts on Reddit. There are different strategies that different people use in order to attract their readers or to make their content more popular.

Skills required

Obviously there is no set of prerequisites that you require to get started in this field. However, there are some skills that will help you to achieve success in a faster way than starting with absenteeism of these skills. These skills are listed below –

Strong basics – It is very essential to have strong grammar and complete knowledge of the language that you have chosen to start writing into. Grammatical errors and poor formation of sentences can pull you back and can also hold your thoughts from going in the direction you want them to.

Figure out your area of interest – This is the most important part. You need to figure out an area in which you are most interested into. This will help you to magnify your ideas and will also allow you to be a specialized writer in that field. Find out if its fashion, lifestyle, food or politics or what amazes you the most and compels you to pen down your thoughts and proudly present them to the world.

Read more and strengthen your research base – It is very important for a content writer to read and have a strong research base. Reading helps you to diversify and a strong research base helps you to write from a vast point of view.

Creativity – It is essential for a content writer to have lots and lots of creativity. You should definitely know how to attract your reader and moreover, how to make your reader to stick to your articles or pieces.

Having or developing these qualities will make your journey a whole lot easier. If you lack in them try developing or improving them by consistently working on yourself.

What is content writing about?

Well there is no domain in which content writers could not fit in. Be it marketing, technology, fashion, lifestyle and many more fields. People are so keen to read about every field and content writers are the source through which people can just unravel the mysteries cooking up into any domain. “Content” is a broad term and means the use of words to convey things to others- about your business, your idea, your project- simply anything.

As a content writer, you will be assigned ideas and topics (or be asked to come up on your own), on which you have to create the content. Such content can be both digital, such as content for websites, blogs, ads, banners, social media platforms, product description, e-books, whitepapers as well as offline, such as stories, news articles, presentations, projects, technical papers, research papers, etc.

But before you just pick up your instruments and start writing, let me tell you a good content piece is based on a fine balance of diligent research, wordplay, sound expertise, and of course, good vocabulary and grammar. Not just that, high-quality content is never created in the first go, but requires precise editing, rewording and fine-tuning to ensure that every single word is directly creating an impact on the reader.

Some tips to improve your content writing

You can improve your skills by following ways –

Write Like It’s Your Job – If you want to get better at something, you have to practice – and writing is no exception! Always try to pen down your honest thoughts and practice as much as possible by writing even the small pieces.

Always go through your work – Editing is a tough skill to learn for beginner writers, because they place immense value on the time and effort they put into writing in the first place. However, a lot of writing is actually rewriting, and this is where the cold, hard eye of an editor will serve you well.

Always speak your mind – Most content on the web is bland and dreadfully boring. This is because far too many bloggers focus on regurgitating the same news as everybody else without bothering to add their own opinions. So, always try to open up and speak your mind.

Write Original Content – It’s your reputation. Every post with your name on it should be original. That probably sounds crazy, with all the tens of thousands of people writing about the same subjects, but it’s easier than it seems. Every talented writer can bring a unique voice, different perspective or new light to an overworked subject.

Hurry up and become a certified content writer by gaining amazing content writing skills. Start preparing now!

He says it,
often: “Of course I admit when I’m wrong-but I’m never wrong.” Even
if he doesn’t say it, that’s his feeling. Generally, his brag-gadocio is a
cover-up because he has a hard time holding on to his self-confidence. He may
have been over-criticized or over-praised in childhood.

Consider these steps in your general dealings with him:

Let him know it’s no crime to make mistakes.

Avoid unnecessary criticism.

When criticism is in order, don’t criticize him but the method he used.

Build his self-respect by appropriate praise when he does an outstanding job; then he will have less need for a phony defensive shield.

The Overly Dependent Individual

He or she
is thought of as a clinging vine. The strange fact is that often he is a
capable individual, and he clings not because he needs help, but because he
needs reassurance. It takes time to get the unsure or overly cautious employee
to stand on his own feet. But if you want him off yours-

1. Go light on the criticism. It isn’t
so much that you have to pull your punches. It’s just that a small amount will
have a strong impact. Usually he overreacts, magnifies a correction into a
major dressing down.

2. Watch him for signs of trouble. If he
does get into a tight spot that he can’t handle, be ready to assist as soon as
possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you take over. When he gets into
deep water, the best help you may give him is to help him figure his own way
out.

3. Keep feeding the ball back to him. When
he comes to you for help prematurely, without trying to cope on his own, help
him see that he does have the answer: “How do you think we should handle
it?”

4. Can you consult him? To reinforce his
own self-confidence, let him participate, where appropriate, in discussions of
problems and so on, and from time to time consult him on decisions you have to
make when you can use his help.

When he’s too popular

Social
lions are great in the living room, but hell on the work scene. Occasionally,
the executive is confronted by the problem of dealing with an overly popular
subordinate. What with phone calls, visits by friends from other departments,
there’s a constant social merry-go-round. Usual result: performance goes down
as his disturbance rating goes up. To exercise some reasonable control:

Check your own performance first. If you are extending special privileges—such as long or excessive number of personal calls, you may have to change the signals and make him live up to the same rules as others do.

Avoid a frontal attack. Direct criticism of his misplaced social activity might leave you open to the charge that you are “butting into my personal affairs.”

Focus on his job performance. It is appropriate for you to call the turn if his activities affect the work. These points apply:

Disturbance
with the work of others. Even if they don’t complain, your observation is
enough to bring action—and warning.

Slapdash
work, to make up for lost time. This gives you an opening to discuss the
quality of his work and the need to perform up to standard.

Low-quantity
level. Be specific in discussing his below-standard performance. Refer to a
recent job in which he ran short of expected goals.

The Alcoholic

Of all the
problem employees you may be called on to deal with, an alcoholic will be most
difficult. According to Dr. J. J. Walsh, Medical Director of Union Carbide,
“Some of our best employees are alcoholics.” And it’s heartbreaking
for the executive to see an individual of outstanding ability victimized by an
addiction that destroys him both as a functioning employee and as a human
being. One of the reasons that makes alcoholism so difficult to deal with is
that two things tend to hide the problem:

Alcoholics
tend to become extremely ingenious in covering up.

Social
drinking is an accepted aspect of our society, and it isn’t easy to make a
clear separation between the social drinker and the one who is a victim of the
bottle. When you are faced by a suspected case of alcoholism, it is the height
of wisdom to think through your actions, if any. To clarify some of the aspects
of the problem, consider the following information and insights developed by
medical and psychological experts.

A booklet,
The Alcoholic Employee, put out by Alcoholics Anonymous, states that there is
general agreement on these basic facts-

There is a distinction between the heavy drinker and the alcoholic. While the former may overindulge on occasion, he does not let alcohol disturb the pattern of his living or obscure his objectives.

Once a person crosses the invisible borderline between social drinking and compulsive drinking, he is never going to be able to drink normally again. A single drink may be enough to start the alcoholic on his merry-go-round. Alcoholism may be arrested, but it can never be cured.

The only way for an alcoholic to cope successfully with his unique problem is to abstain completely from even the smallest quantity of alcohol in any form. Alcoholism, a pamphlet issued by the U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, suggests indications of alcoholism: “One of the more obvious early signs of a pre-disposition to alcoholism is that the individual drinks more than is customary among his associates and makes excuses to drink more often.

This is an indication that he is developing an insistent need—or a psychological dependence—on alcohol to help him escape from unpleasant worries or tensions.

He becomes filled with discouragement and self-pity and tries to ‘drown his troubles’ in more liquor. But his drinking has passed beyond the point where he can use it as a way of coping with his problems, and he is faced with the disease of alcoholism.” To act constructively when dealing with an alcoholic employee consider these guidelines:

1. Don’t act until there is work interference.

While this point applies to problem employees in general, it has particular cogency in relation to a heavy drinker.

2. Develop a realistic view if he has an off-the-job drinking problem.

Occasionally, an executive is contacted by a wife or other member of an employee’s family with the information that his drinking is a problem at home. As much as you might like to help, it is unwise to do so in your professional capacity. Any moves you make could justifiably bring the accusation from the employee that you are meddling in his personal affairs. This point must be made clear to the relative, even while you are conveying your interest and sympathy.

3. Avoid moral judgments.

The least effective and most damaging action a superior may take is to criticize an employee’s drinking. The perfectly commonsense statement, “You have just got to stop drinking. You’re ruining your health and your career,” will be completely useless. This point is clarified when you-

4. Understand the psychology of the alcoholic.

There’s no point in telling an alcoholic that he is ruining himself for one of two reasons. One is that he won’t believe you, no matter what the circumstances are. The other, deeper reason, is that often he is drinking for precisely that reason. It’s because drinking is in some cases a form of slow suicide that the individual is an alcoholic.

He seeks self-obliteration in a limited way, just as the suicide seeks the ultimate permanent form. Some authorities feel that alcoholism is physiological, that is in its later stages the body develops a need for alcohol that must be satisfied in the same way a starving man must have food. This concept explains why the strongest arguments become meaningless to the alcoholic. He almost never has sufficient will-power to stop simply by wanting to.

5. Make your approach nonthreatening.

The most effective thing you can do when you approach the subject with the individual is to do so on a nonaccusatory basis. You may not be able to get him to stop drinking. You may be able to persuade him to take some action that may help. If you can, make a specific suggestion. You may want to suggest that he see the company doctor or psychiatrist, or other agency that you know about. The Alcoholics Anonymous groups have a good record of rehabilitation. But perhaps the employee will refuse to accept your recommendation that he seek help from any source that is so easily identified, since he may not be willing to see himself as an alcoholic.

For this reason, the visit to a doctor or psychologist may be a more practical suggestion from you. Nevertheless, it’s helpful to know that most large communities have alcoholism information centers operated by volunteers affiliated with the National Council on Alcoholism. These centers provide information about the problem, have resources for limited support or counseling, and can make referrals to doctors, psychologists, clergymen, family agencies, and hospitals in the community.

Most large companies have sufficient experience with the problem of alcoholism to have both a policy and a tested procedure for dealing with the problem. It would be wise for you to check with your superior or appropriate person in Personnel to get their recommendations in dealing with this type of problem individual.

Emotional First Aid

It can be
an upsetting experience: one of your subordinates displays emotional
disturbance. It may either be a fit of crying, a prolonged or intense display
of anger, a low mood verging on depression. The following approach is based on
suggestions made by the professional staff of BFS Psychologist Associates of
New York City. Of course, you don’t want to play amateur psychologist. If the
behavior displayed is extreme, what’s called for is immediate medical
assistance. However, if the emotional storm is within normal limits—such as
reasonably justifiable anger or tears, there are steps that you can take to
help matters. What you do will vary, depending on the nature of the problem.

1. In case of crying or other similar
behavior:

Show your serious concern to the individual. Make clear your desire to help.

Take her to a private place, your office for example, as unobtrusively as possible.

Give the employee a moment or two to compose herself. Avoid exerting pressure, to make it clear that you’re not annoyed by the situation.

Ask, “What’s wrong?” If the employee doesn’t wish to respond, however, don’t press the point. e. Ask, “How can I help?”

When the tears have subsided, give the employee the choice of returning to work or leaving early, if it’s in the afternoon. g. If the employee explains what’s wrong, listen; offer sympathy. If it’s a complicated or highly personal matter, don’t prescribe. You may want to suggest that she seek professional guidance.

2. For an outburst of anger:

Face the individual firmly and assert your authority.

Show a strong mien. Be firm without showing anger. Make clear your intention to have things cool down before any action is taken.

Isolate him by taking him off to a corner or separate room.

If you don’t know, ask the reason for his upset.

Listen to his complaint. Generally this will help calm him down.

Be prepared to deal with his shame or sheepishness. Usually, there’s a revulsion of feeling in which the individual is sorry for his display of temper. Alleviate this feeling by assuring him that it’s “just one of those things.”

If he needs counseling or guidance, suggest that he see a professional person. Preferably, don’t use the phrase, “See a psychiatrist,” or anything similar. This suggests that you’ve made a diagnosis of abnormal behavior, which probably will be resented.

3. In case of despondency:

Approach the individual and show your concern.

Isolate the individual.

Ask for the reason for his feelings. If this confidence is re-fused, don’t press the point.

Show your friendliness and desire to help.

If the individual begins to cry, don’t interfere. Weeping in this case might be a desirable alleviant.

If the upset suggest serious causes, recommend that the individual seek professional help or guidance. If your company has a medical department, leave it up to the nurse or doctor to refer the employee to proper channels. In all cases where there may be some kind of reaction from other people, talk to them to make sure that they keep their curiosity under wraps. As far as others are concerned, try to smooth over the situation as quickly as possible to help bring things back to normal.

The Careless Employee

“The employee was careless.” The statement is often used to explain an error or accident on the work scene. But seasoned executives know the “carelessness” designation is a coverup, rather than a diagnosis. The trouble with attributing mistakes or mishaps to carelessness is that it automatically puts the problem out of bounds. It is practically impossible to cope with carelessness—as such.

Experts of the Institute of Scrap Iron & Steel have analyzed “carelessness.” They found it to be a catchall term, covering many forms of failures. Through their analysis, they revealed that many of the specific faults that hide behind the carelessness designation can be dealt with. Here is the list of possible employee faults disguised by the term “carelessness”:

Firstly he didn’t follow rules and regulations.

Secondly he didn’t use safe work methods.

Next he didn’t follow standard procedures.

Subsequently he didn’t pay attention to what he was doing.

Then he didn’t foresee an action or movement.

Also, he didn’t wear personal protection equipment.

And he didn’t think ahead and plan his actions.

He didn’t follow instructions

Then, he didn’t consider the consequences of his own actions or the action of a machine or equipment. He didn’t know his own physical capabilities or limitations.

The value of the list is that, unlike “carelessness,” most of the items suggest remedies. For example, the man who “doesn’t follow instructions” can be asked why he didn’t. Weren’t they clear? Any development interferes with following the original orders? Could he have prevented the failure by informing you of unexpected changes? And so on.

Verbal – The way you orally communicate
or share a message amongst your employees becomes essential in deciding how a
message is understood. Verbal communication
is essential as it is majorly used during everyday meetings and client
interactions.

Non-Verbal Communication –
Communication doesn’t only include what is being said, it also includes how it
is being said. Non-verbal communication forms take up an important part of
workplace communication, wherein the use of facial expressions, the tone and
pitch of the voice, gestures and body language all come into play. Non-verbal
communication reiterates and emphasizes on the verbal messages by adding

during this time. Organizational Behavior, examines human behavior in a work

foolproof evidences to support your claims.

Workplace communication & Organizational Behavior

Organizational Behavior seeks to understand the role and impact of the behavioral patterns of people in a group. Its facets help us to understand the kind of behavior that will help in effective operation of businesses. An organization can only be fully functional when there is proper group dynamics and rapport between the employees. It is based on a few fundamental concepts:

Individual Differences

Perception

A whole Process

Motivated Behavior

The desire for involvement

The value of the person

Human Dignity

Mutuality of Interest

How to ensure proper organizational behavior?

What is public speaking

Public speaking is an act of speaking to a group of people
with an intention of informing them regarding any agenda. This is basically a
one sided conversation where one person of an established platform (for
instance, CEO of any company or principal of any school ) spreads the
information to the people (for example, employees of any company or students
and teachers of a school), if that information concerns everyone.

When i speak of public speaking, one can imagine Martin
Luther King Jr. presenting his famous speech ‘I have a dream’. Just look around
and you will definitely find an old and aged man , sitting on a bench in the
park with a stick in his hands and speaking to a bunch of people about his days
of yore. That’s usually a one sided conversation. Public speaking, so to say,
is a one way conversation where a single figure speaks to the crowd that is
listening to that one person. That one person is either sharing her or his own
views about any agenda or empowering the crowd with powerful and effective words
and expressions. Then what’s the difference between public speaking and talking
to the crowd? The difference lies in the way the information is conveyed.

What actually is the fear of public speaking?

For some people, public speaking is an opportunity to build a strong identity and shine under the spotlight on the other side for some people, it seems intimidating, spine chilling and to some extent fearsome as well. Just imagine, you are invited to present your ideas in a room full of people. You’ve got influential and powerful ideas in the box that’s in your head but you see at the people as thousands of zombies waiting for your words to be served and rip your flesh apart. Well that’s when your fear overpowers your influential ideas. This fear of public speaking, also known as “glossophobia” where you find death an easy escape, could be hurting your professional and personal life. Whether you have to persuade your mom to let you out on a trip with your friends or to ask your boss for a promotion, you need to speak out and speaking skill is the key to move ahead towards achievement. A little bit of anxiety is understandable, your palm gets sweaty, your legs start trembling but this reflects a weak persona of the speaker. You need to be calm and steady to be able to engage the audience.

How to overcome the fear of public
speaking

There would be some past events that creates the anxiety inside and disturbs your flow of ideas. This disturbance is clearly reflected in your speech. What anxious speakers usually does is whether skip their portion of speech or pretend as if they have sore throat. Some of them doesn’t wear their glasses to avoid contact with the audience. Well this is the wrong way of overcoming the fear of public speaking. You are not delivering a speech then, you are just telling yourself that ‘this will be over soon’.this way, you are not working for improvement but just the opposite. Don’t be the ‘unspeaker’. Embrace and accept your fear and focus more on your speech rather than on the anxiety. So let’s get to know what actually is the right way of overcoming glossophobia.

Tips to overcome your fear

Practice in front of an audience: when you practice alone, you might not know what mistakes you are making. Practicing your part in front for a group of people will lead you to know where your expressions lack the effectiveness. Not only detecting mistakes, but peaking in front of people will make you learn how actually you have to present it in front of the audience and how you will feel then. This way you can prepare yourself before actually presenting your speech in the room full of ‘kids’.

Express yourself truly : I once attended a seminar where the speaker was so frank with the audience that she even talked about how she was feeling standing in front of the audience on the podium. And the whole audience know she was being anxious. But the speech that she delivered then was strikingly impressive. So being frank about your feelings with the audience can sometimes lessens the distance between the speaker and the listener. If you get away with the anxiety that’s wandering in your mind, throbbing your heart extremely fast, you can get away with this feeling in the very beginning of your speech.

Know your mirror self: do you even know what you’re talking about? Do you understand the words you are speaking out? I sometimes wonder if we are aware of our own outer image that the audience is introduced to? Look in the mirror and ask yourself if, you know what you uttering, verbalising. Do you understand your own word and expressions? If yes, then only you are able to persuade and make understand the audience your unique ideas.

Don’t be mechanical : If you want your ideas to be accepted by the audience with satisfaction, their “willing suspension” to your ideology will only be possible if you create your speech in an creative and interesting way.a mechanical reading of the script will only lead the audience to fall asleep. Once, in a workshop, a speaker had given his speech on the topic travelogy, the most adventurous writeup. But the speaker tried every way to make it as boring as sleepy for the audience that the listener only lended their ears in the session of question and answers. Try to make your speech as interesting as possible. You can make it involving even just through your gestures.

Start with a question: If you are confused how you should begin your speech and where to start, then ask the audience involvement at the very beginning. Ask them questions about the topic that you are presenting and let them create the path for your further points to talk about. This way you can link your ideas to one another and end your speech with a satisfactory note.

Interact with the audience: Your interaction with the audience will let you know how much the listener knows about the topic and how much they expect from you to talk about it. Of course the question answer session is for the interaction but a constant conversation with the people in an informal way will let you to be more expressive and make you less fearful of the nervous atmosphere that your mind has created. Also if the audience has any part in the conversation then you will not feel like you are the centre of the spotlight and that every eye is stuck at you.

Pick the subject that interests you as well: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” said Albert Einstein. Its true. If you don’t the subject understand yourself , how are you going to make people understand it? And this lack of understanding on the speakers side creates trouble for the speaker sometimes. So if you think of being clear and confident about the subject you are going to present, make sure that you understand it yourself first. And talking about the topic you are interested in will clear your path already as you will be happy and excited while delivering the speech and even though unconsciously, you will make it interesting for the audience.

Ppt or notepad to remind you of your points: prepare notes or a powerpoint presentation to keep you in track of your thoughts.sometimes you might forget the point that you want to link in the train of your thoughts. That’s where the PPT plays a helping hand to remind you of your next point.

Do it: until and unless you speak, it’s no way possible to overcome this fear. Put your thoughts in front of your family and friends. Make them understand of what you think. It would be frightening initially, but after three or four speeches you present, you will be the one who seek public speaking as a great opportunity to mark your identity, nor as someone who escapes reality out of fear.

Why should you enhance your speaking skills?

The ability to speak skillfully is the capacity to put words together in a meaningful way to reflect thoughts, opinions and feelings. It is said that a picture is worth thousand words but those words no doubt will come in handy if the picture is poorly interpreted. Speaking skill is clearly an important method of communication. Great leaders, politicians, philosophers, revolutionists, educators, lawyers seek to develop their speaking skills to be able to persuade, influence and most importantly inform the audience. A well delivered speech, with well chosen words gains the attention of the audience. Ever thought what would have happened of Rome if Mark Antony would not have been a good orator?
Your being able to versify your thoughts effectively positions you out and above from the rest. A well developed verbal skill improves self confidence. It not only enhances your career opportunities but also you find a deep level of fulfillment after you experience a connection with an appreciative audience through a well-composed and well-delivered presentation.
The question arises why someone should work on their speaking skills if they don’t want to be the sole speaker in the crowd, standing on the podium, empowering people. The idea is that public speaking is the macrocosm of our small talks in cafeteria. The difference lies only in the way we converse. So one has to be conscious of their words not only when they are asked to present a speech but also to communicate and justify their existence through verbalizing their thoughts in a day to day conversation. There comes the role of speaking skill. While you are speaking, your speech represents your point of view, your judgment, your way of thinking, and your identity.
For speaking effectively, including the words that make sense in your speech, first you need to listen. Listen to what people around you say, listen to what your mind says and assimilate what you think is true and then vocalize your point of view. The process helps in developing good conversational artistry.
As we have already talked about, a good oratory skill reflects your identity. If not trying to be the Martin Luther King Jr., your speech represents what you truly are. If not revolutionary, your speech affects the masses if delivered with mastery. So pubic speaking is not just talking about topics of national concern where the speaker is considered to be the intellectual and is expected to present a life changing and morale boosting eloquent and
articulated speech but it can be as general as the old man talking to a bunch of people in the park. Yes it is good to be concerned about your speech but being anxious about it for the whole week before it and while your presentation; you are just over thinking and burdening the box on your head. After all, the reality is that the audience in the room is just kids in their underpants seeking some knowledge from your brilliant mind.
There is no need of being insecure of your speech. Deliver your thoughts to the people around you as clearly as possible and skillfully uphold to your personality as “a man speaking to men”.
