A web portal is a website that brings information together from diverse sources in a uniform way. Usually, each information source gets its dedicated area on the page for displaying information often, the user can configure which ones to display.

A web portal provides an easy access to citizens in general and it provides an all-time availability of e-Governance related activity to citizens as per their convenience. Citizens can access information of their interest and download related forms or applications, as per their suitability and convenience. Web-based railway ticket booking is an prime example under this type of implementation.

Implementing web portal is comparatively lowers the cost of implementation as compared to service delivery center but success of this implementation depends largely on the level of computer literacy amongst the targeted citizen. If the targeted citizens belong to urban and educated strata then probability of success increase many folds as compared to rural areas where other than digital literacy, connectivity also acts as an bottleneck for delivery of service through the web portal.

Web portal is needed as it provides an easy to use application across different devices (PCs, tablets, mobile) and standards are existing for display of data in a web browser by using HTML and using other technologies like CSS for styling, JavaScript for client side validation and interactivity and also various server-side scripting languages like PHP, ASP .Net and C#, etc. for developing applications which are accessed by websites.
