THE CHILD LABOUR (PROHIBITION AND REGULATION) ACT, 1986

The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 has been one the most debated acts regarding the condition of children in India. The respective Act outlines where and how children can work and where they cannot. Also, immediately after the publication of the act the provisions of the act are meant to take action upon. Except for part III#, as that discusses the conditions in which a child may work. 26th of May, 1993 was the date appointed by the Central Government. Thus part III can only come into existence as per the decided date.

A person who has not completed his fourteenth year of age is the definition to a child is. While listed in Part A of the Schedule the part II of the act prohibits children from working in any such occupation. For example Construction work on the railway or anywhere near the tracks, catering at railway establishments, automobile garages, plastics factories, etc. As listed in Part B of the Schedule the act also prohibits children from working in places where certain processes are being undertaken. For example beedi making, soap manufacture, tanning, brick kilns and roof tiles units, etc. While these provisions do not apply to government recognised or aided school or a workshop where the occupier is working with the help of his family.
