Initial Configuration

Initial Configuration

To configure a switch for the first time, you need to follow these steps:

Connect to the switch console port using a console cable and a terminal emulation program, such as HyperTerminal or PuTTY.

Power on the switch.

When prompted, enter the switch’s initial configuration mode by pressing the Enter key.

The switch will prompt you to enter a hostname for the switch. Enter a name that is unique and descriptive.

Configure a password for the switch’s privileged mode using the enable secret command.

Configure the management IP address for the switch’s management interface using the ip address command.

Configure the default gateway for the switch using the ip default-gateway command.

(Optional) Configure a banner that displays when you access the switch by using the banner motd command.

Save the configuration by using the copy running-config startup-config command.

Verify that the configuration has been saved by using the show running-config and show startup-config commands. Once you have completed these steps, the switch will be ready to use. You can configure additional features, such as VLANs and trunking, as needed.
