Virtualization Technologies and Hypervisors

Virtualization technologies are used in cloud computing to create virtual environments that allow multiple users to share physical resources such as servers, storage, and networking infrastructure. Hypervisors, also known as virtual machine monitors (VMMs), are a key component of virtualization technologies that enable the creation and management of virtual machines (VMs).

A hypervisor is a software layer that creates and manages VMs, each of which appears to the user as a complete physical machine with its own operating system (OS), applications, and resources. Hypervisors allow multiple VMs to run on the same physical machine, each with its own isolated environment, preventing interference between different VMs.

There are two main types of hypervisors: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 hypervisors, also called native or bare-metal hypervisors, run directly on the physical hardware, and provide a high level of performance and security. Examples of Type 1 hypervisors include VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer.

Type 2 hypervisors, also known as hosted hypervisors, run on top of a host operating system (OS) and are less efficient than Type 1 hypervisors because they have to share resources with the host OS. Examples of Type 2 hypervisors include Oracle VirtualBox, VMware Workstation, and Parallels Desktop.

In cloud computing, hypervisors play a crucial role in managing the allocation of resources among multiple users and ensuring the security and isolation of each VM. They also provide flexibility and scalability, allowing cloud providers to easily add or remove resources to meet the changing needs of users.
