It is rendering mode used by browsers for a web page if it does not use a valid doctype. This different mode used by browsers is applicable for older web pages which did not have the DOCTYPE.
This mode changes the CSS styling like widths of elements are calculated differently or styles applied to content in tables. Hence, CSS will not work as expected so care needs to be taken.
