Understanding Software Compatibility Testing

compatibility testing

Let us understand Software Compatibility. A common cause of software failure is a lack of compatibility with other application software, operating systems, or target environments. Further, this differs greatly from the original (such as a terminal or GUI application intends to run on the desktop now requires to become a web application, which must render in a web browser).

Compatibility is a type of non-functional testing to ensure customer satisfaction. Certainly, it examines whether software application or product is proficient enough to run in different browsers, database, etc.

Not to mention, the application can also impact because of different versions, resolution, internet speed and configuration etc. Therefore,  it’s important to test the application in all possible manners. As a result, it reduces failures and overcome from embarrassments of bug’s leakage. In addition, Compatibility testing also endorses the application works properly in many other browsers, versions, OS and networks successfully.

For instance, in the case of a lack of backward compatibility, this can occur because the programmers develop and test software only on the latest version of the target environment, which not all users may be running. This result in the unintended consequence that the latest work may not function on earlier versions of the target environment or on older hardware those earlier versions of the target environment was capable of using. Sometimes such issues can be fixed by proactively abstracting operating system functionality into a separate program module or library.
