It is also called as video display unit (VDU) and convert computer signals into text and pictures and display them. Most use cathode ray tube (CRT) technology but liquid crystal display (LCD) technology found on laptop and tablet computers is gaining in popularity.

The various computer video signals formats (such as VGA, XGA, and UXGA) also differ substantially, with the primary difference in the scan frequencies. There had been different types of

analog video like Video Graphics Array (VGA) could display 16 colors at 640 × 480 pixels or 256 colors at 320 × 200 pixels and SuperVGA (SVGA) which could support 16 colors at a resolution of 800 × 600 and expanded to support 1,024 × 768 pixels with 256 colors. Digital displays involves Digital Visual Interface (DVI) and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) technology.

Troubleshoot Monitor

  • Check for loose electrical and video signal cables.
  • Check for bad contrast/brightness adjustments.
  • Check for correct refresh rate, resolution and color depth as per the video card and OS.
  • Attach the monitor to different computer.
  • Try different screen resolutions to resolve the problem.
