IP routing and addressing process

IP routing and addressing process

IP routing is the process of forwarding packets from one network to another based on the IP address of the destination network. The IP addressing process involves assigning unique IP addresses to devices on a network so that packets can be delivered to the correct destination.

Here’s an overview of the IP routing and addressing process:

IP Address Assignment: Each device on a network is assigned a unique IP address, which is used to identify the device on the network. IP addresses are typically assigned manually by an administrator or dynamically through a protocol like DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).

Routing Table Creation: Each device on a network maintains a routing table that lists the available networks and the next hop for each network. The routing table is created either statically or dynamically through a routing protocol like OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) or BGP (Border Gateway Protocol).

Destination Network Lookup: When a device receives a packet, it checks the destination IP address against its routing table to determine the next hop for the packet. The device then forwards the packet to the next hop.

Packet Forwarding: The packet is forwarded to the next hop device, which repeats the process of destination network lookup and forwarding until the packet reaches its final destination.

The IP routing and addressing process involves several protocols and technologies that work together to ensure that packets are delivered to the correct destination. Some key technologies involved in IP routing and addressing include IP addressing, routing protocols, routing tables, and packet forwarding. It’s important for network administrators to understand these technologies in order to design and manage effective IP networks.
