File and folder permissions

File and folder permissions

In Joomla, file and folder permissions determine who can access, read, write, and execute files and folders within the website’s directory. There are three basic types of permissions:

  1. Read (R): allows users to view the contents of the file/folder.
  2. Write (W): allows users to modify the contents of the file/folder.
  3. Execute (X): allows users to run executable files or scripts.

Joomla has a built-in file and folder permission system that can be accessed through the administration panel. The system allows administrators to set permissions for each file and folder individually or for a group of files and folders at once.

Joomla also uses a special user group system that allows administrators to assign different levels of permissions to different groups of users. For example, an administrator can create a group for content editors and grant them permission to edit content files, but not to modify system files.

It is important to set file and folder permissions carefully, as incorrect settings can cause security issues or prevent certain functions of the website from working correctly. In general, it is recommended to give as few permissions as possible to each user or group, and to regularly review and update the permissions to ensure the website’s security.
