Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize one’s own and other people’s emotions, to discriminate between different feelings and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and Behavior. EI competencies include empathy, intuition, creativity, flexibility, resilience, stress management, leadership, integrity, happiness and optimism, as well as intrapersonal and interpersonal communication skills.

Researchers have shown that people with high EI have better mental health, very good job performance, and more effective leadership skills. For example, Goleman’s research in his book, working with EI, indicated that EQ accounted for 67% of the abilities deemed necessary for superior performance in leaders, and mattered twice as much as technical expertise or IQ.

Emotional Intelligence & Organizational Commitment

An Organizations success or failure can be ascertained by the emotional tone set by the managers and the leaders. Organizational leaders with high emotional intelligence may influence the relationships in the work setting, which may then affect group and individual emotional intelligence and Organizational commitments. A leader high on Emotional Intelligence would have a dynamic and effective team who are dedicated to accomplishing Organizational tasks and goals.

Emotional Intelligence & Career Commitment

If an employee is able to correctly manage positive and negative emotions in the workplace and control strong emotional states such as anger that they experience at work then they will have an impact on the relationship that they have with other employees and has the effect of making them more committed to the Organization. Emotionally intelligent individual are expected to recognise, manage and use their emotions to remove the ensuring obstacles and moving ahead in their career better than people with low emotional intelligence.  In case of professions with high level of complexity and demands, emotional Intelligence can allow people to control their stress effectively and thwart the negative effects on one’s profession and making them more dedicated to their career.

Many researchers believe that job aptitude has a positive effect on performance and emotional intelligence and individuals have positive relationship between job involvement and job performance. Job involvement maybe a probable predictor of performance and related Behaviors High emotional individuals dynamically involved in the job and more committed to their work than the low emotional intelligent individuals.

Emotions in the workplace generally have a target that is, being angry at someone, being proud of an achievement that they are likely to be activated by events in the workplace, are attributable to the job and will effect job satisfaction. That emotion in the workplace is favourably associated with the overall performance in one’s job and satisfaction. It is usually considered that employees with higher emotional intelligence will have higher job satisfaction. This is because the employees with higher emotional intelligence are able to develop strategies to conquer the possible consequence which may come out of stress. Those employees with emotional intelligence find their place of work satisfying and this influenced their satisfaction and overall productivity that lead to effective management and Organization development. On the other hand those with less emotional intelligence won’t be in a position to overcome the stress situation. In additions, in a group setting employees with higher emotional intelligence will be able to impact the emotions of others in such a way, that they will be able to improve their own as well as co-workers morale.

Executives with high level of emotional intelligence would be more eager to cooperate with their fellow colleague, particularly those that are behind in their work schedule. The Organization will benefit from this positive attitude. Work runs efficiently without any interruptions. Emotional intelligent individuals have genuine concern for welfare of others and they voluntarily assist others.

To the degree that the work requires interaction among individuals, emotions such as excitement, anger and fear are indispensible in aiding cooperation. Employees, who are intelligent about their emotions, will be more competent and effective in their interactions with the work environment and with their co-workers. Emotional intelligence plays important role in the kind of work an employee produces and the relationship he or she enjoys in the Organization. Emotional Intelligence competencies allow people to regulate their emotions so as to cope effectively with stress, do well under pressure and adapt to Organizational change.
