Systems theory (ST)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Systems Theory: the transdisciplinary study of the abstract organization of phenomena, independent of their substance, type, or spatial or temporal scale of existence. It investigates both the principles common to all complex entities, and the (usually mathematical) models which can be used to describe them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Systems theory focuses on complexity and interdependence. A system is composed of regularly interacting or interdependent groups of activities\/parts that form whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Part of systems theory, system dynamics is a method for understanding the dynamic behavior of complex systems. The basis of the method is the recognition that the structure of any system — the many circular, interlocking, sometimes time-delayed relationships among its components — is often just as important in determining its behavior as the individual components themselves. Examples are chaos theory and social dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing one part of a system may affect other parts or the whole system. It may be possible to predict these changes in patterns of behavior. For systems that learn and adapt, the growth and the degree of\u00a0adaptation\u00a0depend upon how well the system is engaged with its environment. Some systems support other systems, maintaining the other system to prevent failure. The goals of systems theory are to model a system’s dynamics,\u00a0constraints, conditions, and to elucidate principles (such as purpose, measure, methods, tools) that can be discerned and applied to other systems at every\u00a0level of nesting, and in a wide range of fields for achieving optimized\u00a0equifinality<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCM and ST<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

ST brings together various components of a complex supply chain (that is the human, capital, information, materials and financial resources etc.) to form a subsystem which is then part of a larger system of supply chains or network. The theory argues that for a holistic perspective ST must be employed to understand the internal and external factors that shape an organisation’s supply chain performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
