Formula is used to determine specificity as<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Count 1 if the styles are applied from the (X)HTML style attribute, and 0 otherwise; this becomes variable a.<\/li>\n<li>Count the number of ID attributes in the selector; the sum is variable b.<\/li>\n<li>Count number of attributes, pseudo-classes, and class names in a selector; the sum is variable c.<\/li>\n<li>Count the number of element names in the selector; this is variable d.<\/li>\n<li>Ignore pseudo-elements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Now take the four values and put them together in groups of four. If two selectors have same speci\ufb01city then they will be applied in the order in which they appear following example explains it<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>p.top {<br \/>\nbackground: none;<br \/>\n}<br \/>\np.top {<br \/>\nbackground: #666;<br \/>\n}<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Even though both \u2018p.top\u2019 have same speci\ufb01city but here only the second applies as it is present below in the listing of styles and is applied \u2018later\u2019 hence it will display background: color #666.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If the style attribute of an HTML element is used, it is the most speci\ufb01c of any selector on the web page as it has a speci\ufb01city of 1,0,0,0 hence it takes precedence over all other rules.
