The collective reference for these stages is the &#8216;forming&#8217; model. Teams are more successful when they transition back and forth between these stages as circumstances change.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>1. Forming stage<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Team leaders provide a structure where there is a clarification of expectations about the initiation of team processes. Work that needs to be accomplished is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">team member introduction, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">team resource assessment, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">and objective definition. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Commonly encounter issues that need overcoming are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">the team leader\u2019s taking on most of the work, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">team members not organized around a common objective, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">and team not taking advantage of all the team resources. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">The team execution process at this stage is a wait and see attitude, where the team process is usually noticed but avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>2. Storming stage<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Team leads need to coach the team in maintaining focus on the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">goals and expectations, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">managing the team process and conflict resolution, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">generating ideas, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">and explaining decisions. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Work that needs to be accomplished is: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">identifying team member expectations, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">discussing differences, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">and conflict management. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Issues that surface are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">team members feeling unsatisfied and\/or overburdened, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">and lack of contribution. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">The status of the team execution process at this stage is the formation of cliques because the general perception is that the effort does not require teamwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>3. Norming stage<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Team leads primarily act as a facilitator who provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">encouragement, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">helps with consensus building, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">and gives feedback. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Attention needs to be given to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">resolving differences through establishing ground rules, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">developing trust, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">and discussing directly how better to work together. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">Common issues that arise are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">ongoing disagreements between team members <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">and team members\u2019 working at cross-purposes. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">The status of the team execution process at this stage is general support for leadership, with the sharing of leadership among the team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>4. Performing stage<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Team leads need to facilitate the team process, where there is a delegation of tasks and objectives.
