Descriptive Statistics<\/h1>\n

In general terms descriptive statistics do just what the name implies\u2026 they describe things! \u00a0There are two variables descriptive statistics entails:<\/p>\n

1) central tendency and<\/p>\n

2) spread or dispersion.<\/p>\n

The Mean<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most common measure of central tendency is the mean or average.\u00a0 To calculate the mean, the data points are added and then divided by the number of data points.<\/p>\n

An important point is that the mean should only be used when the data is from a normal distribution.\u00a0 If, for example, the data is from an exponential distribution (e.g.\u00a0most \u201ctime\u201d related metrics) the mean should not be taken to describe its central tendency.\u00a0 Instead, the median should be used.<\/p>\n

The Median<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say we have the following data set: 1, 9, 11, 22, 9, 1, 6, 1, 2\u00a0and desire to know the median. Here is how we do it.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Sort the data in descending order: 22, 11, 9, 9, 6, 2, 1, 1, 1<\/li>\n
  2. Find the middle of the data set which will be the median: The integer 6 is in the middle and is our median.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If there are an even number of data points, the two numbers that comprise the center are averaged since there will not be one single\u00a0number dead in the middle.<\/p>\n

    The median is generally used when dealing with skewed distributions.\u00a0 The most common example is home prices.<\/p>\n

    Since there are always a few \u201cexpensive\u201d homes in the neighbourhood the distribution is often skewed.\u00a0 This makes using the median more appropriate since these \u201coutliers\u201d are not able to skew the result.<\/p>\n

    The Mode<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The least used measure of central tendency is the mode.\u00a0 The mode is simply the most\u00a0frequent value in a data set.\u00a0 Using the example above {22, 11, 9, 9, 6, 2, 1, 1, 1} the mode would be 1 since it occurs more times (3) than any other number.<\/p>\n

    Excel can be used to figure these out for us.\u00a0 Here is how:<\/p>\n

    1. For the mean use the following: =average(data set)<\/li>\n
    2. For the median use the following: =median(data set)<\/li>\n
    3. For the mode use the following: =mode(data set)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
