The planning is done to identify and address challenges that may arise in the future to obtain the right talent in place at the right time. The National Academy of Public Administration defines workforce planning as \u201cA systematic process for identifying human capital required to meet organizational goals and for developing strategies to meet these goals\u201d. The workforce planning exercise is conducted to accomplish three important purposes,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The workforce represented is clear to meet the organization\u2019s strategic goals<\/li>\n<li>Human resources is aligned with business strategy and has a plan of action to meet the talents whenever needed<\/li>\n<li>The rationale is established to meet the business strategies and resources and are optimized to meet the policies and procedures to ensure overall business value<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Forecasting and planning helps in a better way companies to manage talent shortages and surpluses in their workforce. There are instances here companies respond to talent needs reactively rather than being proactive. For example, GE realized the talent pool available in the market and altered their strategies to hire talent when needed by planning for talent needs required in the next 10 years.
