Web browser<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the software that allows a user to access and view HTML documents. Examples of Web browsers include Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome web browser, etc.<\/p>\n

ISP<\/strong><\/p>\n

An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides access to the Internet.<\/p>\n

ISP refers to a company that provides Internet services, including personal and business access to the Internet. For a monthly fee, the service provider usually provides a software package, username, password and access phone number. Equipped with a modem, you can then log on to the Internet and browse the World Wide Web and USENET, and send and receive e-mail. For broadband access you typically receive the broadband modem hardware or pay a monthly fee for this equipment that is added to your ISP account billing.<\/p>\n

The steps to connect to ISP by DSL modem is<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Setting up a router for DSL Internet connection<\/h4>\n

This article will guide you on how to properly set up your router for DSL Internet connection.<\/p>\n

Before setting up your router, make sure that your computer has active Internet connection.\u00a0 You can do this by connecting your computer to the modem using an Ethernet cable and try browsing any website.\u00a0 If you cannot access the Internet, contact yourInternet Service Provider (ISP)<\/b>.\u00a0 You can also contact them if you are uncertain about the type of Internet connection you have.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0If your Internet service does not involve a modem, you can contact your ISP to verify your connection type and determine what kind of cable is to be used.<\/p>\n

Setting up a router for DSL Internet Connection<\/b><\/p>\n

There are two (2) ways to do this:<\/p>\n

i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Setting up your router using the Setup CD
\nii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Setting up your router using the web-based setup page<\/p>\n

Setting up your router using the Setup CD<\/b><\/p>\n

All devices come with a\u00a0Setup Wizard<\/b>\u00a0for easy installation.\u00a0 The\u00a0Setup Wizard<\/b>\u00a0software will automatically detect the type of Internet connection from your ISP.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0 The software assumes that your computer is connected directly to the modem as shown in the image above.<\/p>\n

Also, the modem might have the same IP address as the default gateway address.\u00a0 It is recommended to change the IP address of either the modem or the router to avoid an IP address conflict.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0 Before doing the following steps, make sure you know the configuration type of the modem.\u00a0 To know the current configuration type of your modem, contact your ISP.<\/p>\n

Step 1:\u00a0<\/b>Connect the computer to one of the Ethernet ports on the router using an Ethernet cable.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0Image may vary depending on the type of computer or router you are using.<\/p>\n

Step 2:\u00a0<\/b>Plug in the router\u2019s power adapter to a power source and connect the other end to the power port of the router.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0If your router has a power switch, turn it\u00a0ON<\/b>.\u00a0 Observe the power light of your router until it becomes stable.<\/p>\n

Step 3:\u00a0<\/b>Access the router\u2019s web-based setup page.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0The default IP address of routers is\u00a0192.168.1.1<\/b>\u00a0while the default password is \u201cadmin\u201d and the user name field is left blank.\u00a0 If you have set a password before but forgot it, you need to reset the device.<\/p>\n

Step 4:\u00a0<\/b>Set your preferred Internet connection type:<\/p>\n

i.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For PPPoE connection setting
\nii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For Automatic Configuration \u2013 DHCP setting<\/p>\n

This type of router configuration is ideal for connecting to a modem which is set to\u00a0Bridged Mode<\/b>.\u00a0 A Bridged modem means you need to have a PPPoE dialer set up on a computer or router to activate Internet connectivity.<\/p>\n

Step 1:\u00a0<\/b>On the\u00a0Setup\u00a0<\/b>tab, click the drop-down arrow for\u00a0Internet Connection Type\u00a0<\/b>then, select\u00a0PPPoE<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Step 2:\u00a0<\/b>Enter the PPPoE\u00a0Username\u00a0<\/b>and the\u00a0Password\u00a0<\/b>provided by your ISP.\u00a0 Select\u00a0Keep Alive\u00a0<\/b>and click on the\u00a0Save Settings<\/b>\u00a0button at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n

IMPORTANT:<\/b>\u00a0 The PPPoE password is case sensitive and would not let you save your settings when you have entered the wrong one.\u00a0 Make sure that you enter the password using the correct letter cases.\u00a0 For information regarding your PPPoE Username and Password, contact your (ISP).<\/p>\n

Step 3:\u00a0<\/b>Click the\u00a0Status\u00a0<\/b>tab.<\/p>\n

Step 4:\u00a0<\/b>Click on the\u00a0Connect\u00a0<\/b>button if the Login Status is\u00a0Disconnected<\/b>.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0If you don\u2019t have Internet IP address and DNS servers under the Status tab, you might need to restart the router.\u00a0 Restarting is done by unplugging the power adapter of the router for\u00a030 seconds\u00a0<\/b>and plugging it back in.<\/p>\n

This type of router configuration is ideal for connecting to a modem in\u00a0Automatic Configuration- DHCP Mode<\/b>.\u00a0 This means that the modem may have its router capability activated as well.\u00a0 This might create a conflict with the router\u2019s routing operation if the IP address of the modem and router are the same.\u00a0 To solve this issue, you can change the router\u2019s IP address range to eliminate the conflict.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0 Make sure the modem is not connected to the router while doing the following steps.\u00a0 Otherwise, you might end up accessing the modem\u2019s web-based setup page.<\/p>\n

Step 1:
\n<\/b>On the\u00a0Setup\u00a0<\/b>tab, select\u00a0Automatic Configuration \u2013 DHCP\u00a0<\/b>for\u00a0Internet Connection Type<\/b>.\u00a0 Then change the value of the 3rd box on the\u00a0IP Address\u00a0<\/b>field.<\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0 This type of configuration may also be used for setting up the Linksys router for Satellite Internet connection.<\/p>\n

NOTE:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>In this example, the IP address used was\u00a0192.168.2.1<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Step 2:
\n<\/b>Click\u00a0Save Settings<\/b>\u00a0and close the router\u2019s web-based setup page.<\/p>\n

Step 3:\u00a0<\/b>On your computer, open the command prompt, type \u201cipconfig\/release\u201d then press\u00a0[Enter]<\/b>.\u00a0 Then type \u201cipconfig\/renew\u201d and press\u00a0[Enter]<\/b>\u00a0again to refresh the computer\u2019s IP address.<\/p>\n

QUICK TIP:<\/b>\u00a0 Remember to use the new IP address of your router (192.168.2.1) the next time you access the router\u2019s web-based setup page.<\/p>\n

Now that you have configured the settings of the router, you can connect the modem to the Internet port of the router using an Ethernet cable.<\/p>\n
