Python terms are the basic words and concepts you will see again and again while writing and reading Python code. Knowing these terms early makes it easier to understand lessons, follow tutorials, and debug errors without confusion. In this section, you will learn the most common Python terms used in data analysis work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A variable is a name used to store a value, such as a number, text, or result of a calculation. A data type tells what kind of value something is, such as integer (whole number), float (decimal), string (text), and boolean (True or False). An operator is a symbol used to perform an action, such as + for addition, – for subtraction, and == for comparison. An expression is any combination of values and operators that produces a result, such as total + 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A statement is a complete instruction in Python, such as assigning a value to a variable or calling a function. A function is a reusable block of code that performs a task, like len() to find length or round() to round numbers. When you run a function, you pass inputs called arguments, and you get back an output called a return value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A module is a Python file that contains code you can reuse, and a library is a collection of modules. In data analysis, common libraries include pandas, numpy, and matplotlib. Import means bringing a library into your program so you can use it, for example import pandas as pd. A package is a structured collection of modules that can be installed, often using pip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A list is a collection of items in order, and a dictionary stores key-value pairs, often used for structured data. An index is the position of an item in a list or string, starting from 0 in Python. A loop repeats code multiple times, such as for loops and while loops. A condition is a rule that decides what happens next, commonly written using if, elif, and else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An error is a problem that stops code from running. A syntax error happens when Python cannot understand your code format. An exception is an error that occurs while the program is running, like dividing by zero or using a missing key. Debugging means finding and fixing these problems by reading error messages and checking your logic. These terms form the foundation you will use throughout the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
