It is a periodical statement of cost designed to show in detail the various components of cost of goods produced like prime cost, factory cost, cost of production, total cost and cost per unit. A specimen of a simple cost sheet is given below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;Cost Sheet (or Statement of Cost) for the period&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No. of units produced&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Particulars<\/td><td>Total Cost<\/td><td>Cost Per Unit<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Direct Materials<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Direct Labour<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Direct (or Chargeable) Expenses &nbsp; Prime cost<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Add: Works Overheads<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Works Cost<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Add: Administrative Overheads &nbsp; Cost of Production<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Add: Selling and Distribution Overheads &nbsp; Total Cost or Cost of Sales<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The terms \u201cdirect expenses\u201d have been excluded from prime cost as per CIMA terminology i.e. according to CIMA, prime cost is \u201cthe total cost of direct material and direct labour\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If possible the cost sheet should have columns for (i) total cost; (ii) percentage to total cost; (iii) cost per unit; and (iv) corresponding figures of the previous period and clear figures for each element of cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Treatment of stock: <\/strong>Stock requires special treatment while preparing a cost sheet. Stock may be of raw materials, work-in-progress and finished goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stock of Raw Materials: <\/strong>If opening stock of raw material, purchase of raw materials and closing stock of raw materials are given, then, raw material consumed can be calculated as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opening stock of raw materials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add: Purchase of raw materials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less: Closing stock of raw materials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Value of raw materials consumed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stock of Work-in-Progress<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work-in-progress is valued at prime cost or works cost basis, but latter is preferred. If it is valued at works or factory cost then opening and closing stock will be adjusted as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime cost<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add: Factory overheads<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work-in-progress (beginning)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less: Work-in-progress (closing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Works cost<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stock of Finished Goods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If opening and closing stock of finished goods are given, then these must be adjusted before calculating cost of goods sold:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cost of production<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add: Opening stock of finished goods<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less: Closing stock of finished goods<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cost of goods sold<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Uses of Cost Sheet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It gives total cost and cost per unit for a particular period.<\/li><li>It gives information to management for cost control.<\/li><li>It provides comparative study of actual current costs with the cost of corresponding periods, thus causes of inefficiencies and wastage can be known and suitably corrected by management.<\/li><li>It acts as a guide to manufacture in formulation of suitable and definite policies and in fixing up the selling price.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Items Excluded From Cost Sheet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following items are of financial nature and thus not included while preparing a cost sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cash discount<\/li><li>Interest paid<\/li><li>Preliminary expenses written off<\/li><li>Goodwill written off<\/li><li>Provision for taxation<\/li><li>Provision for bad debts<\/li><li>Transfer to reserves<\/li><li>Donations<\/li><li>Income tax paid<\/li><li>Dividend paid<\/li><li>Profit\/loss on sale of assets<\/li><li>Damages payable at law etc<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Production Account<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the details of cost sheet or production statement are shown in the form of a ledger account, it is known as production account. Besides cost of production it also includes selling and distribution expenses. It is prepared in three parts &#8211; the first part gives the cost of production, the second part gives the cost of goods sold and the third part shows cost of sales or total cost for the period.
