Storekeeping is a service function. Storekeeping is the function of receiving materials, storing them and issuing these to workshops or departments.
The stores department is under the control of a person known as storekeeper. The storekeeper is a custodian of all the items kept in the store. The stores should be spacious, well lit and well equipped so that costs can be minimized and service can be provided effectively.
The main objectives of store-keeping are:
- To protect stores against losses.
- To keep goods ready for delivery/issue.
- To provide maximum service at minimum cost.
- To avoid over-stocking and under-stocking.
- To facilitate perpetual inventory.
