FACTORIES ACT, 1948
Factories act, 1948 is for the occupational safety and health of the employees, in factories in India. It deals with a number of problems concerning the safety, efficiency, health, and the well being of the working employees.
This Ministry of labour and employment in India administers this act, through its: Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI), and also by the State Governments through their factory inspectorates. This act is applicable to any factory wherein ten or more workers are employed.
Although this act covers the factories only and it restricts the working hours. Also, provides employment to the young aspirant including women. Thereafter provides with the spread of working hours and overtime.
What it prohibits?
- It prohibits the night shifts for women. Although there are certain sectors like – IT and textiles, etc entertain employment of women in the night shift.
- It bans the employment of female workers on or near the machinery in motion.
- Also, those of industries providing night employment to women should provide with the safeguard in the workplace. Thus provide them with the transportation facilities from work to the nearest point of their residence.
Therefore, this act extends to the whole of India. The main aim and objective of this act is to safeguard the employees and protect them from the exploitation at the workplace.
