What is creative writing? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a very general definition,\ncreative writing is any form of writing that is written more from the idea of\nentertaining the reader rather than informing them. Wikipedia defines creative\nwriting as any form of writing that goes out of the bound of professional,\njournalistic, academic and technical writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my personal opinion and as\nsomeone who loves reading, I think creative\nwriting is anything that helps you put your thoughts and expression on paper.<\/strong>\nFiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, autobiography, memoirs, prose, novels, all\nthis and many more forms of writing take shape as creative writing. You can\neven be creative at technical writing though it is an entirely different field\n(technical writing is the writing done solely for the purpose of information\ngathering, used in technical and occupational fields). Creativity abounds in\nall spheres of your life, to bring this to paper with a clarity and structure\nso as to express yourself in a way that others can read it is chiefly what\ncreative writing is about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you can see various\ninstitutes and websites provide creative writing as a widely popular\nprofessional course for many students. One might wonder how creativity can be\ntaught or even go so far as to say that writing a novel or a poem cannot be\ntaught. However, the courses have Poto be\nhelpful for a number of people, what they aim to do is not just to teach\nwriting as a mechanical skill (it\u2019s something that all of us know how to do)\nbut the courses are designed to provide a direction and guidance to this\ntalent. A lot of potential writers feel stuck at the start of their journey as\na writer, creative writing skills help them enhance their talent and become\nbetter at their craft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of creative writing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Poetry  <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Poetry is one of the most popular forms of creative\nwriting. It includes many other forms under it, haiku, sonnets, limericks,\nmicro-poetry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also the chief form used by a lot of writers on\nsocial media. You can see the examples of this in Instagram poets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Songwriting is also a kind of poetry turned into music.\nIt follows more like a melody and rhyme, while poetry, in general, works well\nwithout rhyme too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fiction is any narration where the events and actions\nare made out of your imagination. It’s a term that takes under it forms like\nnovels, short stories, novellas, or any prose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Novels and stories are the most read forms of creative\nwriting. The art of storytelling and the ability to conceive life like\ncharacters plays a major part in the writing process. Fiction then can be\npresented in many genres, such as adventure, fantasy, children books, realism\netcetera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Non-Fiction <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Non-fiction is written as a true and accurate account of\nsomething, some examples of this are memoirs, autobiographies, journals,\nhistory, travel writings and many other such genres. On the surface it might\nlook like there isn\u2019t much creativity involved in this type of writing.\nHowever, to arrange these factual accounts and truths in a way that makes sense\nand appeals to reader requires a great deal of thinking and imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Script<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Script writing is another form of writing done for\nfeature films, television shows or video games. It is often a freelance\nprofession. Script writers or screenwriters are often paid by producers to\nwrite scripts for a certain concept or idea, screenwriters also come up with\noriginal plots for their scripts and approach producers in the hopes that they\nwill be optioned or sold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Copywriting <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Copywriters help create\ncontent for various marketing communications. Copywriting is the art of writing\ntext for advertising and marketing purposes. It helps create billboards,\nbrochures, catalogues, jingles, magazine advertisements, scripts for\ncommercial, social media posts and other marketing communications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blogging<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A blog is a website\npublished online to either impart information, share opinions or even write\npersonal stories.Blogging is a popular medium to gather and impart information.\nIt takes on many different genres, it could be about your business or\nprofession or your hobby (handmade crafts, cooking, etc) , blogs are also a\nplatform for discussions on particular topics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot of people\nwho share their writings, stories or poems, through blogs. It serves as an\neasily accessible medium and can be easily promoted through social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The skills to master to become a better writer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Technical ability (language command, knowledge of form,\nliterature) <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Quite surprising that the term technical ability comes in a list of skills for creative writing, but like any other hobbies, field, activity, anything you want to call it, basic technical knowledge is necessary here as well. Writing comes naturally when you have a command over a language or multiple languages, most writers, however, work with the one chief language that they feel they are most comfortable with (most of the time it\u2019s their mother tongue). As a writer, you have to be good with words and know the rules of a language not just for you to be able to follow them but for the ability to break them and create your own rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A knowledge of different forms\nof literature or creative writing is also a big help for you to experiment and\ntry different forms, to find the one that fits you well. You can even merge and\nplay with these forms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information about publishing,\nweb publishing, etcetera, never hurts either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technical abilities are the\neasiest skills to learn, you can easily earn the best of it with hard work and\nconsistency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talent and imagination. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Talent cannot be learned. Yes,\nthat might even be true. But we all have talent, it\u2019s something we are born\nwith it. And if you are planning to take on creative writing you must be\npassionate about it, and what is talent if not passion? So fear not, your\ntalent can be brought out even if you think you don\u2019t have it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now why this comes under a\nskill is that a talent not combined with action never brings much results, so\nit is necessary to exercise and nurture your talent. A talent for writing does\nnot happen overnight, there are no pixie dust or charms and spells at work\nhere. Good writing skill only comes gradually, it can be improved with time and\npractice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagination too can be\ncultivated, while it\u2019s an inborn faculty you still might want to work on it a\nbit. You might even find it a bit rusty, be imaginative and give form to the\nideas you have in your head. Think outside the box and don\u2019t be afraid of it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patience, persistence and a lot more patience. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To be patient is to be\nsuccessful, (I just made that up). Success is not something that comes in an\ninstant, especially not as creative writers. Patience is a skill that will help\nyou in every field in your life. You have to be patience not just for a\nsuccessful writing career but for the process of it. Do not give up because the\nfirst draft didn\u2019t come out perfect, it takes a lot of editing and changes for\nthe end result to happen, the book you have in your hand is a work of many\nmonths and infinite hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You also have to be persistent\nin your attempts. Try and keep trying, it always helps in the long run. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be patient with yourself,\nyou\u2019ll get there. You have to be able to face criticism and to be able to take\nit constructively rather than be offended, any and all criticism will only help\nyou become a better writer. Think of criticism as feedback and try to adopt\nwhatever you think can help you with your writing skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tips and practices to improve yoru writing skills <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  • Read. A lot. <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Reading is the most fun and\nentertaining exercise you can do to help you write, it will help you know\ndifferent styles, genres, ways of expression. It definitely helps vocabulary.\nIt might even help you with ideas, you might come up with an original idea\nwhile reading another\u2019s ideas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Reading is also a way of\nexpression and plays a big role in nurturing your passion for writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Carry a pen and paper. Always. <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Carry a diary, notebook, a\ngadget if you prefer typing. An immediate means to pen down your thoughts can\nbe very helpful in retaining ideas that might come to you as a passing thought.\nSo put them to use whenever you find anything to write about in your head,\ndon\u2019t just rely on your memory always, you\u2019ll find out that words leave it very\neasily and quickly. You can make rough notes and outline of your ideas and work\non them later when you are sitting down to write. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Practice writing. Write, write and write.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Write. When you have words\nfloating in your head put them to paper. It could be a poem, a paragraph or\neven just two lines, I know writers who write haikus or short poems as a\nwarm-up exercise before delving into the extensive serious work. As a beginner,\nit is your best exercise, it makes you patient and open to criticism and\nobviously improves your writing. Write about anything to everything and do not\nhesitate thinking that you\u2019re not good enough, don\u2019t be too harsh on yourself\nfrom the very beginning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Get feedback, share your work with fellow writers. <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Constructive feedback and\ncriticism will help you find the weaknesses and strengths of your writing. You\ncan work more efficiently towards improving your writing skills with positive\nfeedback available. So share your work and discuss it with your friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Find your voice. <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

             Try not to copy someone else\u2019s style of\nwriting, experiment with different styles and you will find your own soon\nenough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            At the end of the day,\ncreative writing is a personal craft and one can always find their own tips and\npractices to look after it. Like finding your favorite reading and writing\nnook, or the time where your creativity works at it\u2019s best. You can find your\nown pace and routine for writing. You might stumble upon a drink that suits\nwell with your writing mood, a type of tea or coffee (my forever escape is\ncoffee). There are a lot many small elements involved in the process of\nwriting. Find the combination that fits your writing persona perfectly and\nweave your words in it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
