Commercial paper is a short-term money market instrument,<br \/>\nconsisting of unsecured promissory notes with a fixed maturity of usually between seven<br \/>\ndays and three months, issued in bearer form and on a discount basis and Issue may be<br \/>\nmade on an interval basis or more generally under revolving underwriting facility extended<br \/>\nby banks, tailored to the needs of the cash flow requirements of the issuers. Thus,<br \/>\ncommercial paper is a Certificate evidencing an unsecured corporate debt of short<br \/>\nmaturity. It represents a promise by the borrowing company to repay loan at a specified<br \/>\ndate. In law, the CP comes closest to a \u201cPromissory note.\u201d<br \/>\nSince CP represents unsecured, short-term promissory notes, only the highly reputed<br \/>\nand creditworthy companies are able to take advantage of this source of funds.<br \/>\nCommercial paper can be sold directly by issuing company or through commercial<br \/>\npaper dealers who either act as broker or purchase the paper outright for quick resale.<br \/>\nIssuing companies tailor both the maturity and the amount of the notes to the needs of<br \/>\nthe investors. Thus. the maturities and amounts of the notes to the needs of the investors.<br \/>\nThus, the maturities and amounts of directly placed paper cover a wide range of<br \/>\ncombinations.<br \/>\nCommercial paper is different from banker\u2019s acceptance. Thus, in the former it is the<br \/>\nobligation of the issuing company while in the case of the latter both the drawer and the<br \/>\naccepting bank have obligations.
