The following two \u201cbehavioral scientist\u201d have offered insights that often prove practical to people in charge of others.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>A. H. Maslow<\/strong><br \/>\nHis thinking was that people are motivated to take action to meet various \u201cneeds&#8221;, as<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physiological needs \u2013 to satisfy hunger, thirst, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Need for safety \u2013 to have emotional security and protection from physical danger<\/li>\n<li>Need to belong \u2013 to have satisfying relationships with others<\/li>\n<li>Need for self-esteem \u2013 to feel good about themselves, and to be recognized for their accomplishments<\/li>\n<li>Need for self-realization \u2013 to grow and develop in a way that is personality fulfilling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Maslow placed these needs on a scale or \u201chierarchy\u201d. He concluded that people meet their most basic need first (physiological needs), then move to the next level (safety) \u2013 proceeding one level at a time until they reach fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. F. Herzberg<\/strong><br \/>\nHe compiled two different lists of work-related factors, as<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Things that can cause satisfaction with a job<\/span><br \/>\nThese include responsibility, recognition, achievement and the work itself.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Things that can cause dissatisfaction with a job<\/span><br \/>\nThese include tedious organizational polices, poor relationships with colleagues or superiors, poor working conditions and worries about job security.<\/p>\n<p>However, while eliminating these causes of dissatisfaction can make employees happy, Herzberg found that they would not necessarily be more motivated. Based on Herzberg\u2019s concepts, a team leader would certainly want to promote harmony among employees, provide adequate comfort and proper working conditions etc. However, to truly motivate workers the team leader should provide motivate workers the team leader should provide new responsibility, training, recognition, stimulating work and a chance for achievement, whenever possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vskills.in\/certification\/Management\">Click here for government certification in Management<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years, scientists and psychologists have developed theories to explain what motivates people.
