“I woke up one morning just feeling empty you know like this pittish feeling in my stomach that I was telling them that I get this pittish feeling in my stomach. I woke up like feeling directionless, I didn’t know where to go, I didn’t know what to do and I had these bouts of feeling so low that I would just start crying at the drop of the hat.”

This was the description of the depressed state that Deepika Padukone went through and through which many of us go through but are afraid to admit thinking what people would think. There is so many stigmas attached to the psychological disorders that the person refuses to accept it and hence does not want to tell his problems to anyone.

A person having some sort of mental illness is already going through an emotional turmoil and is not able to identify the source of it and his different behaviour. On top of it, most people instead of understanding his problem say that “It’s all in your head.” People need to understand that the person did not choose this. It’s an illness just like any physiological disorder like fever or headache and can be cured with proper medication and patience.

In fact in many regions of India mental disorders are still explained as supernatural stuff. People go to ojhas and treat patients by conducting various pujas, chaining them and beating them with thick chains. And this is not done only by illiterate people. Many literate people also believe in such things. And not only they treat the person badly during the illness but also after the person has been cured he is not accepted and treated differently by the society. It’s high time that we get over our own psychological disorder of treating these people differently and start seeing mental disorders as a normal disorder. The step taken up by Deepika, to speak up openly about what she went through, is praiseworthy and hopefully will change the minds of many people.

Intelligence is usually thought and connected with only academic achievements. The Indian concept of intelligence has shown a great concern for human potential and explored its nature in the context of self, society, universe and beyond. The Indian view is holistic and emphasises on mental abilities both in the cognitive and non-cognitive domains and their integration. The word commonly used to identify this concept of intelligence in all its breadth and scope is ‘Buddhi’.

Buddhi can be defined as the mental vigour or power of forming and retaining conceptions and general notions, reason, intellect, judgement, perception, knowledge of one’s self consciences , will and desire, presence of mind, ready wit and skill. The Indian view emphasises on four competencies characterizing an intelligent person –

Cognitive- Includes sensitivity to context, comprehension, discrimination, problem solving and effective communication.

Social – Following social norms, service to elders, obedience, helping the needy, showing concern for the environment.

Entrepreneurial – Hard work, commitment, vigilance and goal directed behaviour.

Emotional – Control of emotions, honesty, politeness, realistic self appraisal, good conduct.

The Indian concept is thus not restricted to cognitive domains only. It emphasises connectivity with social aspects and the work environment. The tests today, whether in schools or in screening, only focus on the cognitive aspects. Testing a person’s ‘Buddhi’ would give a more holistic picture of the person’s abilities.

Food wastage in weddings is one of the biggest problems in India. People spend thousands of money on the food in weddings but approximately 40% of the food prepared gets wasted away. In some cases, the waste is to the extent of 20-25 per cent when the number of dishes exceeds the number of guests invited to the marriage halls. In a country where thousands of people have no food to eat, so much food is thrown away just like that.

Guests invited in weddings are mostly responsible for the food wastage because of different thoughts, mostly they have the fear that if they go second time to take the food they won’t get it, for the first time they have seen the food they have never eaten before or due to lack of education they do not realize that if they take extra food it will get wasted.

While the money spent on the weddings cannot be controlled, some measures can be taken to minimize the wastage of food.

Choose the dishes wisely. The guests are not there to educate their taste in food so keep the things that are familiar so that it does not get wasted just because people want to try something new!

Have servers behind the wedding buffet to help guests with correct sized portions. People move around in a hurry and don’t concentrate on how much exactly they are putting on their plates. So, having servers to assist them to avoid wastage is a trend worth a try.

Tie up with an NGO to supply the leftover food while maintaining proper hygiene standards. It is something you can tell the caterer to do for you or approach one on your own.

A norm abroad but ignored in India, RSVP is a must! Please tell your guests to confirm their presence in advance. Of course, last minute cancellations and additions are obvious, but at least it gives an approximate idea of people who are going to be attending the event.

The cell phones that we use for several hours every day, that help us connect with many people and also solves our problems using various apps, is actually a very powerful source of electromagnetic radiation. Studies have shown that EMR from cellular phones, both the radiation from the handsets and from the tower-based antennas carrying the signals, leads to the development of brain tumours, genetic damage, and other exposure-related conditions.

A research conducted in Australia in 2009 showed that the electromagnetic radiation corrupts the DNA cargo. Today there are more than two billion cell phone users being exposed every day to the dangers of electromagnetic radiation (EMR)—dangers government regulators and the cell phone industry refuse to admit exist. Included are: genetic damage, brain dysfunction, brain tumours, and other conditions such as sleep disorders and headaches. The amount of time spent on the phone is irrelevant as the danger mechanism is triggered within seconds. Researchers say if there is a safe level of exposure to EMR, it’s so low that we can’t detect it.

Cell phones have become an inseparable part of our lives. We cannot imagine a single day without our mobile phones. And this is the reason that despite of the fact that many people know about the dangers EMRs expose us to, it is very difficult to control it.

How to dress up for a Corporate Interview?

Apart from your qualifications and abilities, the one thing that can help you get a job is the way you dress up. Many other people might have the same qualifications as you have, hence the way you dress up might help tip the balance in your favour. Remember “First impression is the last impression.” So make sure that you leave a good impression.

You need to be sensitive to the job role for which you are applying. For example should you be applying for the role of personal assistant to a managing director you need to tailor your appearance to exude an air of efficiency and smartness. Here are a few tips that you could use –

It’s important to show up with clean, well-brushed hair so you look as put-together as possible. Have a subtle ‘do. Men should avoid spiking their hair or gelling it in a distracting manner, and women should avoid loud hair-clips or other hair accessories and wear their hair down.

Your employers will notice your hands as soon as you give them that first handshake, so you should have job-ready fingernails at all times.

For men, professional attire includes a dark-colored suit, long-sleeved shirt, formal shoes, and briefcase. For women, professional attire includes a suit, a suit with skirt, and conservative shoes.

The right shoes can tie your outfit together. Your interviewers will notice your feet when you’re sitting down, so it’s important to have the right look. Have nice reasonably-high heels. Don’t wear platforms or stilettos. Check that your heels aren’t worn down or don’t have dirt clinging to the bottom.

Wear tasteful and subtle jewellery. A quiet silver necklace, ring, or bracelet can help your classy look. Bring a simple portfolio or briefcase.

Brain drain is the migration of scientists, doctors, engineers and other technically qualified persons usually from a developing or underdeveloped country to an advanced or developed country.

This has become a major concern for all the developing countries including India over the past few years. Every year hundreds of our best brains make frantic efforts to leave India.

A recent study conducted by the Indian Institute of Management- Bangalore (IIM-B) shows that the students going for higher studies abroad has increased by 256% in the last 10 years. When 53,000 Indian students went abroad for higher studies in 2000, the figure shot up to 1.9 lakh in 2010. US is the most sought-after place, followed by the UK, Australia, Germany, and France. The question arises why our young and talented scientists, engineers and doctors go abroad and settle there? Most of the students prefer staying back in the host country due to better work opportunities and heavy pay packages. After getting good global exposure and getting introduced to the high-quality life and facilities, the students become reluctant to go back to the home country. Another major reason for this one-way traffic of talent is a lack of research facilities in India. Many of our best students go abroad for higher degrees or for research work.

There is a huge difference in the fees paid by the students studying in the premier institutes in India as compared to the students who study aboard. While an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) student has to pay an average fee of Rs.9000 per month, the fee paid by an Indian student studying abroad per month is anywhere between Rs.90000 and Rs.240000. It’s high time that we pay attention to the seriousness of the problem. While the government is doing their bit by making the medical students going to the US for higher studies sign a bond with the government, promising to return to India after completing his / her studies and if the student doesn’t fulfill the bond obligation, the ministry can write to the US and the permission for the student to practice in the country will be denied, we should do our bit to contribute towards the country’s development.

Junk food is a very common word we use every day while getting concerned about our diet before eating one of them. No doubt they are tasty and pocket friendly but they cause harm not only to our stomach but also to our brain. Junk foods typically contain high levels of calories from sugar or fat with little protein, vitamins or minerals.

Foods commonly considered junk foods include salted snack foods, gum, candy, sweet, desserts, fried fat food and sugary carbonated beverages. Many foods such as hamburgers and pizza can be considered either healthy or junk food depending on their ingredients and preparation methods. The more highly processed items usually fall under the junk food category.

In a study published in the journal Physiology & Behaviour, researchers at UCLA found that rats fed a diet low in fat but high in simple sugars and refined flour were not only more obese than rats that had a better diet, but also less willing to work for a reward. A study by Paul Johnson and Paul Kenny at the Scripps Research Institute in 2008 suggested that junk food consumption alters brain activity in a manner similar to addictive drugs like cocaine and heroine. After many weeks with unlimited access to junk food, the pleasure centres of rat brains became desensitized, requiring more food for pleasure. After the junk food was taken away and replaced with a healthy diet, the rats starved for two weeks instead of eating nutritious fare!

According to Freeman,” aptitude is a combination of characteristics indicative of an individual’s capacity to acquire some specific knowledge, skill or set of organized responses such as the ability to speak a language, to become a musician or do mechanical work. “It simply states that you need to possess qualities in different proportions to learn or to become something, such as to acquire the ability to speak a language. These qualities can be harnessed by appropriate training but some innate ability in that field is required.

There are various types of aptitude tests available-

Tests of Colour Vision- These type of tests are usually used in army, to be able to distinguish between different flags, uniforms etc. The people who are colour deficit could be diverted to some other field.

Tests of Visual Acuity- This type of ability is usually required in occupations like pilot, who need to be high on visual acuity.

Motor and Manual Tests- This ability is required by people involved in mechanical jobs like mechanical engineering etc.

Aptitude in Medicine- These tests are used in the screening of medical students for selection in college.

Aptitude for Teaching- Teaching aptitude test is administered during or after professional education, to evaluate the professional knowledge.

Aptitude tests thus play a major role in the screening of students for admitting in college, selection in jobs and also for guiding students in choosing their career.

With the increased use of internet and technology worldwide, web designing has become one of the most sought after careers these days. Web designing is emerging as an important career option. The term web design is normally used to describe the design process relating to the front-end (client side) design of a website including writing mark up.

There are two primary jobs involved in creating a website: the web designer and web developer, who often work closely together on a website. The web designers are responsible for the visual aspect, which includes the layout, colouring and typography of a web page. Web designers will also have a working knowledge of using a variety of languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and Flash to create a site, although the extent of their knowledge will differ from one web designer to another.

Some of the latest trends in web designing are huge background images, card-based designs, digital first branding, open data, responsive design evolved etc. Responsive web design is at its best when it’s device agnostic; where you’re not aiming to design for particular resolutions or sizes. Instead you should be aiming to design with the content and design in mind and how this content flows and adapts to the various environments it might be seen or used in.

Corruption has taken its roots in India as it has become a pervasive aspect of Indian politics. Corruption in simple terms may be described as ‘an act of bribery’. Corruption is defined as the use of public office for private gains in a way that constitutes a breach of law or a deviation from the norms of society. In every government office it is almost impossible to get your work done without bribing every person involved in the process, from peon to the officer.

As government regulation of business was extended in the 1960s and corporate donations were banned in 1969, trading economic favours for under-the-table contributions to political parties became a very common political practice. During the 1980s and 1990s, corruption became associated with the occupants of the highest authorities of India’s political system.

Corruption has become a routine in almost all sections of the government. Politics is an example criticized every day. More than half of India’s population work for 30-50 rupees per day while the money that is taken in the name of development makes the people with power rich. India is a rich country with poor people. If such corruption continues it will surely lead to the demise of the economic status of India.

A study showed that 50% of the people had first hand experience with using bribes to get a job done in public office. We have to bribe a person just to make him do his job! The government is taking initiatives to remove corruption from the system but first we should do what we can. Refuse to give bribes. If some officer is asking you to bribe him to get your job done, show his true face to the public and report to the police. Government is taking some steps and some we should take.
