It has been 30 years since the most catastrophic incident took place, the Bhopal gas tragedy. The tragedy that shattered the whole Bhopal with its effects. In the early morning hours of December 3,1994, a gas called methyl iso-cyanate leaked from the plant of an American company ‘Union Carbide’ in Bhopal. 40 tons of this poisonous gas got spread in the whole city.

More than 10,000 people died, some got blinded and physically impaired. The lungs, brain, muscles, reproductive and immune systems of many people got affected. Around 5 lakh people got diseased.

The worst part of the story is that even today, its effects can be seen in Bhopal. That factory still contains harmful substances like mercury, chromium etc which haven’t been treated yet. These harmful substances creates water and air pollution. This has led to several cases of miscarriage among pregnant women, new born children with physical impairment, cancer and skin diseases among people.

According to a survey, in 2002, around 4000 people affected with these toxic gases visited hospitals and in 2005 the number rose to 6000.

Another thought to be pondered upon is that this American company that did too much harm to our citizens gave 0.47 Arab dollars to the victims as compensation whereas the same America took 1.5 Arab dollars when 11 of its labourers died in Mexico in deepwater horizon oil spill. That’s how our poor Indians are valued all over the world. Ironically some people still use the products of ‘Union Carbide’. Not just that, some of the great artists advertise it’s products.

However, whosoever government has come in the past 30 years in India have only opened the ways for many foreign companies like ‘Union Carbide’ to attract foreign direct investment.

Bhopal gas tragedy wasn’t a sudden crisis that took place, many workers started dying from the very beginning of the setting up of plant. When it came to the notice of people, many reporters and labour unions started protesting against it. When this case came to the Parliament, the then government ended up defending the company.

After the incident, when the company’s chairman ‘Warren Anderson’ was found guilty, he successfully fled to America and the then government let that happen.

Unfortunately, our government is still keen on inviting such companies to India without carrying out proper investigation process.

It’s high time that we consider dignity of labour as an important element for India’s development. It’s important that our government like all the governments of other countries start valuing Indian citizens be it- rich or poor.

Any country whose farmers are not happy and satisfied, can never prosper in true sense. A farmer who satiates the hunger of millions of people of a country, if can’t fulfill his own stomach then its truly a setback for that country. India, where agricultural sector dominates the other sectors, the people working on those agricultural lands are constantly being ignored and their needs are hardly recognised.

Over 5,600 farmers, 20148 women farmer committed suicide in 2014. Also the current figures are no less disappointing as suicide by farmers have risen in number as compared to last year. 158 farmers killed themselves in July in Karnataka, this year’s toll of farmer suicides to 197, the most since 2003 agrarian distress. Telangana is also not behind as in the month of July alone, as many as 12 farmers killed themselves in just 5 districts of the state while in the first 5 days of August, the state has already reported 3 suicides by farmers.

Such is the condition of other states too. So how can we say that India is developing in true sense?

Incessant rain and hailstorms in some parts while no rain in other parts, debt, bore well failure, high interest rates on loans, unfair price for their crops are some of the many reasons for farmers’ suicides.

Taking for an instance the case of a farmer, Hanumantha Reddy of Chitradurga district took Rs. 4 lakhs loan from a private financial institution at 24% interest even when as per the law, banks can charge only 14% interest on secured loan and 16% on unsecured. This constant harassment of farmers by private financiers is hardly checked.

Now taking into consideration the vagaries of nature! Who is actually responsible for it? Is it our rich class? As I really don’t think that a poor man can afford air conditioners, perfumes or deo, fridge, cars and other luxuries. Increased solar radiations, green house gases or dark aerosols- participles in the air eventually warm the Earth’s surface and it’s these effects that can produce an immediate change in rainfall.

India is truly a diverse country as on one hand, some people can’t stay without air conditioner for a minute and on the other hand some can’t live because of its indirect effects on their life.

Its understandable that consuming luxuries has become a way of life for some people but then one can’t ignore the needs and sufferings of the poor either.

Unfortunately, the procedure of providing compensation to the family of deceased happens at a slow pace. Also not every farmer gets compensation. The data shows in Karnataka only 60 out of 197 affected families were approved for compensation from 1st April to 29th July 2015 by the government.

More than 3.20 lakh farmers committed suicide in 25 years. Is that what happens in an ideal country? Are we really sensitive towards those who feed us?

I believe that a country prospers only when its citizens are happy. Therefore its high time that the government gets serious about this big issue and we as the responsible citizens of the country try and exploit its resources to the extent that it doesn’t cause harm to other helpless people.

Capital punishment is a punishment by death. In today’s world, 36 countries actively practice capital punishment, 103 countries have completely abolished it, 6 have abolished it for ordinary crimes only and around 50 countries have not used it for at least 10 years now.

The four most populous countries in the world i.e China, India, The United States and Indonesia practice capital punishment. However, out of the 15 most developed nations of the world, around 12 countries have abolished this practice.

There arises several questions in my mind regarding capital punishment. Will it ever help in ending the crimes for which it is given? Will hanging of a rapist, ever end rapism? Will executing a terrorist, ever terminate terrorism? I wonder if capital punishment would ever end capital crimes from the roots!

A terrorist who wants to create terror among people, will he ever be terrorised by his own termination? Does it really act as a deterrent anymore? Do people really fear capital punishment.

Another question that comes to my mind is that, have we ever paid attention as to why people commit such crimes! Taking an instance from Kasab’s life, once he asked his father for new clothes on eid, but his father being a poor man couldn’t provide them, which made him angry. It was then, he left his home and got engaged in petty crime with his friend, moving on to armed robbery. That’s how one day they got into contact with Lashkar-e-Taiba.

So what was it, terrorism or poverty, which resulted in 2008 Mumbai attacks?

What Kasab did, will never be justified but its important to understand that why he did so! Yes, we can surely think of punishments which can actually transform a person and make him/her a better human being in life.

No one is born criminal but is made one. Even the innocent can be made into terrorist. Kasab’s life is one of the many examples of this.

The UN estimates that 2.1 million children die before reaching the age of 5 every year- 4 every minute, mostly from preventable illness such as diarrhoea, typhoid and so on. Who is responsible for these deaths? Have they been hanged as well for the deaths of these innocent poor kids?

Capital punishment will surely end criminals but I really doubt if it will ever end crime.

No one is born bad, its his circumstances, hardships that force him to take wrong paths. Also some of the terrorists end up becoming a tool in the hands of political or religious leaders.

Poverty, unemployment, malnutrition, social and economic inequality are some of the many reasons behind various crimes. So, what should we focus on- prospering people or terminating people?

India known to be a developing country, is a land of cultures, traditions and values, however it is a prime area for sexual harassment to occur. Around 5 lakh children face sexual abuse every year. Young girls are sold as objects to become sex slaves and even forced into prostitution. 12 lakh children are tranferred , transported or received for the purpose of sexual exploitation all over the world, most of whom are Indians. Is this what we call a developing country?

The present condition has been worsened by the introduction of oxytocin injections in the market. This drug serves the continued propagation of species. Helpless, poor girls who are victims to child trafficking are being injected with this drug to make them mature before age.

Not just in India, it is prevalent in other countries like Singapore too. In today’s world, girls facing exploitation are more in number than boys. This gender gap might be because of higher victimization of girls, lower willingness of boys to disclose abuse or both.

In a poor country like India, it is not shocking to see people selling their kids off to be sexually abused, just to acquire basic necessities of life. Lack of employment, economic loss, no job security, lack of human rights are some of the many reasons of child trafficking.

Poor families sell their children off to gangs to make money. Another cause of sexual exploitation is that people around the world find pleasure in the outcomes of this abuse.

Had our government been more concerned to provide employment to poor people, give them job security apart from planning great pension schemes for themselves, I wonder how different the situation would have been!

Had the laws been implemented instead of just being on papers, then surely people would have said with conviction that ‘India is developing’,

Life is too short to love but we are busy fighting with each other. It is too short to care but we are busy making things difficult for others. We have got so much to share but our greed has overpowered our benevolent attitude. Why have we become like this? Is it actually our fight? Do we want this?

I believe that it’s not our fight, a common man has never gained anything from such conflicts. According to me, it’s a fight of a few people who want to gain power over the others, those people whose ultimate goal is to acquire control over everything.

However, this want of power has always affected general public who actually have no role in this whole scenario. They are the ones who are forced to leave their homes and are made to go to borders just to fight with the opponent country. What is the fault of these innocent beings who are pushed into such conflicts?

Wars serve no purpose. There is loss of life and property and it benefits neither of the countries involved. The direct consequence is wastage of manpower and resources. In countries where people struggle to earn daily bread and butter, there huge finances are wasted in the production of defence goods like guns, tanks, bombs etc.

People lose their loved ones and all their belongings. Just because of the greed of a few people, thousands of lives are sacrificed. One must have given a thought to whose greed I am talking about! It’s a greed of those people who want to gain power and rule other countries and they are our politicians.

See the irony behind it- Not even a single politician dies in these wars but lives of thousands of innocent people are sacrificed.

It’s after effects are just horrendous and remain for years. Therefore, wars are just pointless and serve no purpose. They never lead to growth and prosperity. Its important to understand that only fellowship, love, sensitivity and tenderness can help creating a harmonious society whereas hatred, greed or war will never lead us anywhere.

We, the people of India are born in a Democratic country where every person has equal rights. Here, every person has the right to be heard. However, there are people whose existence still remain unnoticed and their voice, unheard.

Adivasis make up 8.6% of India’s population according to 2011 census. They comprise a substantial minority of the population of India. They have been facing various problems of land, health, sanitation, education, human rights, unemployment, separatism and so on.

Be it Attapady tribe of Kerala, Muthuvans of Southern India, the Bhils of Central India, the Garo of Northeastern India or the Dhodias of Western India, their condition is more or less the same.

Their land which is the only means of livelihood for them is being taken away and is being allotted to corporates or Multi National Companies to exploit minerals and other resources, everything in the name of development.
I want to ask people that whose development is it anyway? Development of people who are left to struggle for survival or of the rich and powerful!

Oil workers and illegal miners are invading their land and bringing diseases. The post independence period has seen a large amount of reforms and developmental policies that have damaged their lands, rights and life. Their freedom to live in their own traditional ways has been taken from them.

Liberalization, privatisation and globalization which is considered a boon for our country has proved to be the biggest threat to tribal communities. Unfortunately, Bureaucrats always end up serving the cause of the rich at the cost of the poor.

Inspire of everything, tribals have never stopped protesting for their rights. Sadly, their problems and issues have rarely been addressed by the media.

Therefore we have to make government and media hear the voice of the unheard. How can we let government run from it’s responsibilities towards the minorities of our country? They can’t be left alone on their own. It is everyone’s responsibility to make them more advance with changing times. It’s government’s responsibility to provide them with proper health conditions, to educate them for their growth and most importantly to prevent the exploitation of their livelihood, their land.

Admission season is at it’s peak and students are striving to get admission in Delhi University, University which is known for it’s high standards in teaching all over the country. At present, around 79 colleges are affiliated to Delhi University.

This year around 3.2 lakh students applied for admission in DU. However, the number of seats available are 54000 which means that 2.66 lakh students would not get admission in any of the colleges of DU. Also the present scenario is that many students who somehow managed to get admission in DU, have somewhere compromised with the course they opted for.

Is this an ideal situation for any country which aims to progress? Is 85% marks too less to get admission in a college of DU? Do those 2.66 lakh students have no right to be admitted in a good college?

A student with 85% marks not getting admission in SRCC is justifiable but he, not getting admitted to any of the colleges is completely unfair.Doesn’t he have a right to quality education?

People say it’s competition that has led to this scenario but according to me it’s lack of resources! Competition arises when there is lack of resources. So the need of the hour is to add more colleges to DU with the increasing population of students.

Not just that , it is the responsibility of every state government to come up with new colleges which will provide quality education to students of their respective states. This will also prevent migration of people from their home towns or cities to metro cities. In a poor country like India, not every parent can afford to send her/his child to a private college.

This earth has enough to fulfill everybody’s need but not enough to fulfill one person’s greed. When a parliamentary panel can put forward a view of hiking salaries, constituency allowance and office allowance of MPs by 100%, when the government can spend crores on their security, when our government officials can travel in air conditioned railway coaches and fly first class in planes all with the public money even when they are not on official duty then surely our government can afford to set up good colleges in a country for its it’s welfare.
