If we talk about humans and their behavior at the center we will find that poor people don’t have a well-developed access to the resources and also they lack information about new technology and other important development around them. Because of this, they are usually neglected and also are cheated by those who have proper knowledge. They are unable to avail the benefits of the development. The denial of development towards these people is a major concern of today. There are numerous solutions to the problems which they are facing. These solutions are replicated and are improvised; these improvised solutions are known as CSR activity. These activities are a great contribution to mankind development by corporates. These corporates are socially responsible organizations, and this behavior of theirs helps them to gain the support of the nation and also of the buyers and investors. It gives firms a human sensitive fame. Thus the corporate houses only focusing on profit making are not able to take these solutions and they tend to disappear. But now with the CSR law when this will be not possible for those corporates. Therefore CSR has to be now taken passionately and professionally by each and every firm without any point of view of profit.

The biggest challenge for HR divisions these days is to manage and control all the CSR activities. HR operations are usually concerned to be limited to recruitment, training, activities concerned with staff and counselling. They are considered to be those professional who lack social/development vision. But exceptional is there in all departments weather it is HR or another departments. Individuals those who have passion to help/serve people don’t need a reason to do so, they just do it. They develop their skill and experience with time. But as HR people are people with exceptional abilities, passion and skill they prove to be good in the field of managing CSR activities.CSR programs require a very different skill set. So individuals those who get into CSR programs need to have a passion of development work and they should be skilled/trained/ developed in the direction of development.

Management heads and senior people those who are involved in the process of decision making in a corporate house must understand and should also keep a passionate attitude towards people and environment around them. People and business are the two that do hand in hand. If business people will take environment as an important factor in each and every business decision that they take for the firm. This will create good wishes from people around them and this will give the corporate a benefit of long term profit. Secondly it will give them a support of local people will strengthen the firm. This reflects a visible respect from own countrymen and that of the Govt. It strengthens the business too. All firms wish to be recognised and rewarded for their good work even thou its main objective is to gain profit. This is the reason why CSR in my organisations is known as the human face of trade. Anything that takes a human face creates a space for appreciated. Thus all the corporates that undertake CSR activities are very much appreciated and recognised by the people. CSR is a spiritual aspect of trade. Unfortunately many leaders and their organisations do not realise this.

Somebody well said people who value others smile are the happiest people, same goes for our corporates, if they will think about the people and do something for them the organisation will become a place to enjoy and platform for the nations real progress.

The development that meets the needs of the present generation as well as makes a base for of the future generations to meet their own needs is known as sustainable development. It contains two major key concepts: first is the concept of needs and the other one is limitations imposed by the new technology.

In today’s era corporates take sustainable development activities as a part of their profit making where in Corporate Social Responsibility focus on addressing socio-economic-environmental issues and concerns. In country like India there are many development issues. There is a lot to be done in the field of agriculture, soil conservation, education, human resources development, ground water table management, child labour, PWD etc. As India is a social country and also the corporates operating in are socially so people expect them to undertake these issues.

Across the world corporates are putting their maximum time, effort and investment in increasing their profits. It is natural that profit is the main motive of every organisation. But CSR is not an activity to be taken to maximise profits. It’s a legal and moral commitment of the organisation towards the environment.

Activities taken under CSR are obligations towards nation. But unfortunately CSR in the organisation remain neglected these days. They are making profits these days at the cost of environmental resources, culture and society. Corporates are non clear with the conceptual difference between CSR and sustainable development.

The regulatory units of Government are found to be helpless in terms of regulatory provisions towards monitoring of the development and expenditure made by the corporate. People like district collector and revenue officer who are responsible for monitoring huge funds and expenditures made by the corporate on CSR activities are also burdened with such serious responsibilities as it doesn’t allow them to vigilant on CSR funds which are often spent by the corporate themselves only. This usually provides corporate a scopes to delay the expenditure of fund, they can use different techniques to meet the dedicated fund meant for CSR. Lack of reports on Corporate Social Responsibility without the prescribed indicators of development and expenditure of Corporate Social Responsibility fund, the corporate usually get opportunities to play hide and seek with the Government and people. They are not transparent in their process.

Most of the corporates are superficial in their Corporate Social Responsibility activities. They feel it to be a barrier in their process of profit maximization. Therefore they either deliberately ignore the demand of development or delay the expenditure. This resulted in ill effect of corporate on people. But with the new regulation in India of 2% mandatory expenditure on CSR from total net profits corporates are seriously taking CSR activates as their moral duty.

Corporate social responsibility has become an essential task for every company these days whether it is a small scale industry or big scale industry. For this firms conduct events like medical camps, scholarships, SHGs, sports events like marathons etc. Some corporates are actively working on disability and street children. These are usually time bound projects or these are undertaking with the supports of some NGOs. Companies mostly invite Govt authorities and people in masses in such programs to grace the occasions and also to establish their visibility in the public and to maintain a strong brand value in the eyes of the people.

Organisations are careful about their ethical expenditures. They are also careful about sustainability of the projects and organisation. Now a day’s CSR is looked upon as a strategic approach towards the management of the risks that can occur from the end of local people’s resentment. When there is resentment in the people of a Government, Media and political parties usually get aware of this trouble in the relationship of people and the corporates. Thus a situation of pressure and conflict arises. To meet these situations all of them try to meet the situations and solve it through different means. In these two major problem solving approaches are usually observed. First is to calm down the reaction of Government and media agencies by applying both legal as well as the illegal means. The second one is fulfilling the needs of people through negotiation and philanthropic approaches.

The scope of law has affected corporate social responsibility as a result of it now each company requires the advice of lawyers on such issues. Lawyers counsel their corporate clients on CSR issues including human rights and anti-corruption issues. The increasing role of lawyers in CSR business decision has brought a positive impact on the global governance.

The legal business is changing at a rapid rate around the world including a number of lawyers around it. In country like UK lawyers have been overlooked in corporate social responsibility where in professionals from the fields of financial services have contributed to sustainable development. But now as lawyers are making equal contribution in CSR. The legal press has issued many articles on corporate social responsibility. Big law firms are making advertisements as they want to provide CSR advisory services to different firms which can be a good client of theirs in future also.

Companies these days are growing with a view point of CSR issues and also are making CSR an important key point for business decisions making. But in adopting CSR in all the business decision making involves many risk and also opens doors for new business opportunities.

Some risks that usually arise are as follows:

It can enhance the brand value.

It Contributes to the stability of the global market

It brings out customer loyalty & satisfaction

It Enhances job satisfaction among the employees

Human rights are the most important factor that has to be taken under consideration when we talk about compliance and ethics. So to establish a good CSR the corporate first has to make sure that every human being weather it is their own employees or the people surrounding them all get their rights.

To make sure on this the CSR initiative done by UN Global Compact made 6 principles out of 10 CSR principles that work on human rights principles which is broadly divided into 2 categories one is Human rights and the other one is labour rights.

The UN Conventions wrote human rights for the governments, it also create a duty for them to ensure protection against human rights abuses. Now corporations have a direct responsibility in respect to human rights. Corporations should not violate these rights for e.g. child labour, forced labour etc.

As such form the perspective of business risk human rights should be implemented as part of compliance programme in an organisation. It serves as a qualifier to proactive CSR initiatives. By using it as the framework for proactive CSR activities, business can take the benefit of identifying specific rights which will help them promote actively those rights that are allied with the corporate core business and its competencies or serve to answer some specific business risks.

CSR consists of 2 basic levels, First is ‘Compliance’, which is required for corporate to imply the basic CSR principles and the second one is ‘Opportunities’, it refers to those CSR activities that create or develop business opportunities. Such opportunities can only be created when corporations proactively engage themselves in activities that contribute to sustainable development and also create some economic value at the same time.

Many firms address CSR as risk management & compliance. However in the long run firms will not be recognised or awarded for an adequate CSR compliance.

Businesses that are skipping compliance and are only working in terms of Corporate Social Opportunities (CSO) will tend to face reputational risks. Just by branding or promoting and not meeting the basic responsibilities the firms are giving an open invitation to criticism. Therefore, every corporate should work with CSR and CSO concurrently. CSR and CSO are complimentary to each other. Alone working with a point of view of CSO firms may tend to see great goodwill loss which can affect their market share. Many firms address CSR as risk management & compliance. However in the long run firms will not be recognised or awarded for an adequate CSR compliance.

UN GLOBAL CSR provides services to both CSO initiatives & CSR compliance. They give competent advice whether a firm just got started working with CSR and compliance, or it wants to take a proactive approach towards CSR in order to add value to the business. It also assists a business by providing it an overview to ensure that it makes the right choices and become aware of the upcoming challenges.
